The Columbus Clippers played a morning game at the Durham Bulls' Athletic Park for the final game of a four game series.
The Bulls scored first in the third inning on a solo home run off the bat of Willy Adames into the front row in right field off Ryan Merritt .
The Clippers tied the score in the top of the fourth inning. Bradley Zimmer singled and stole second base. Richie Shaffer singled on a line drive to center field to score Zimmer.
Columbus 1 Durham 1.
Columbus went ahead in the top of the sixth inning. Chris Colabello singled to right field. With two outs Giovanny Urshela singled moving Colabello to second base. Ronny Rodriguez singled to second, scoring Colabello; Urshela moving to second base. Adam Moore singled scoring Urshela. Columbus 3 Durham 1.
Merritt pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and one earned run, striking out seven and walking two. Joe Colon came in in relief and gave up just one hit in 1.2 innings.
Shawn Armstrong took the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out Durham's Shane Peterson doubled over the wall in right field. Armstrong struck out catcher Curt Casali on a called third strike. Michael McKenry flew to right to end the game. Columbus 3 Durham 1. The Clippers won the series 3-1 against the best team in the International League.
Merritt (3-3) won the game. Brent Honeywell (2-3) was charged with the loss despite a good start, allowing eight hits in six innings, striking out ten with no walks.
Urshela at shortstop, Shaffer at third base and Ronny Rodriguez at second base each made brilliant fielding plays.
The Clippers travel to Gwinnett for a three game series starting Friday. The team returns home on Monday, May 15 for a Dime-A-Dog Night at 6:35 PM.
