Clippers Beat Indians 10-6

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It was a team effort for the Clippers on Friday night as all but one batter recorded a hit and all but one baserunner scored a run and Columbus pounded out a 10-6 win over the Indianapolis Indians at Huntington Park.

Columbus showed up in a big way in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits, one walk and a hit batsman. 3B Jared Goedert led off the frame with a triple, then came all the way around to score on a triple by Clippers LF Tim Fedroff. Fedroff then scored on a groundout to put Columbus up 2-1, a lead that would not be relinquished.

After a strikeout, CF Ezequiel Carrera singled and stole second ahead of a walk by 2B Cord Phelps. With two on and two out, 1B Vinnie Rottino doubled to right field, scoring both Carrera and Phelps to make it 4-1 in favor of the Clippers. DH Matt LaPorta was then hit by a pitch to again put two on with two out, but a flyout to center to stopped the bleeding.

The Clippers would go on to record single tallies in each of the final six innings. Goedert took care of the scoring by himself in the third inning, homering on a line drive over the center-field fence to make it 5-1. In the fourth, Rottino reached on a one-out triple to left field before coming plateward on LaPorta's single, giving Columbus a 6-1 lead.

Indians starter Rudy Owens (3.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR) was chased by LaPorta's base hit and RHP Daniel McCutchen took the mound in a long relief role. McCutchen (2.2 IP, H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR) was able to strand LaPorta, but Columbus picked it right back up in the fifth when Carrera stole second base with two outs, forcing a throwing error that allowed C Luke Carlin to score from third.

RF Russ Canzler joined the hit parade in the bottom of the sixth inning, launching his 12th home run of the year over the center-field wall to fill the run-per-inning quota for Columbus. In the seventh inning, Fedroff and Carlin teamed up for back-to-back doubles, Carlin's two-bagger driving in Fedroff.

The Indians had jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when SS Chase d'Arnaud hit a one-out single into center field and then came all the way around to score on CF Starling Marte's minor league-leading 12th triple of the season. The Indians came into the contest 39-13 when scoring first in a ballgame, but have now lost in that situation each of the past two days.

Indianapolis was able to score another lone run in the top of the fifth inning when C Tony Sanchez singled in LF Jeff Larish, who had doubled, and the Tribe tried to make things interesting with a four-run rally in the top of the eighth. 2B Anderson Hernandez led off that frame with a triple, his fourth of the season, before scoring on RF Jose Tabata's second hit of the game.

That single finally chased Columbus starter Corey Kluber (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 9 K), who improved to 8-7 on the season with a stellar outing. For Indianapolis, Owens fell to 7-4.

With one on and none out in the eighth, d'Arnaud drew a walk before Tabata moved to third on a flyout. d'Arnaud then stole second base, his 23rd steal of the season in 23 attempts. Both Tabata and d'Arnaud promptly scored on a single by 3B Matt Hague. After a strikeout, DH Brandon Boggs drove in Hague with a double. The 13th double of the season for Boggs had cut the Columbus lead to 6-9, but the Tribe was unable to muster any more offense in the contest.

The Clippers got one last run in the bottom of the eighth after LaPorta hit a one-out triple to center field and scored on Goedert's two-out double to left. When all was said and done, every Columbus batter except Phelps had at least one hit and every Columbus baserunner except for SS Gregorio Petit scored at least one run. Despite the loss, all but one Indianapolis batter recorded at least one hit.

The Indians (55-33) and Clippers (44-44) will continue their three-game tilt on Saturday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. LHP Justin Wilson (6-4, 3.34) will look to right the ship for the Tribe after back-to-back losses, while Columbus will likely counter with LHP T.J. McFarland (3-1, 3.69).
