Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings won a back-and-forth affair over Quad Cities, 9-7 on Wednesday night. Despite a sloppy game for both teams, Clinton hung tough for a series opening victory.
Both starting pitchers struggled mightily from the get-go. Josh Hader for Quad Cities did not complete the first inning, recording just two outs. The lefty allowed four runs on a pair of doubles, four walks and a hit batter in the opening frame.
Rigoberto Garcia failed to build upon a fine outing his last time out, even working with a sizable lead. The LumberKings starter gave back the advantage by surrendering seven runs on eight hits, both season-highs.
Clinton trailed 7-6 after Garcia departed, but the offense picked up their pitching staff. In the sixth, the LumberKings tied it up by manufacturing a run without a hit. A walk and a hit batter put two aboard for D.J. Peterson. The third baseman hit a smash to Austin Elkins, and the ball skipped under his glove. The fielding error brought home the tying run as Pizzano scored.
The LumberKings took the lead in the next inning. Taylor Ard ripped a double to lead off the inning. After a bunt single by Gaby Guerrero, Alfredo Morales put Clinton on top with a single up the middle.
Clinton added another on an RBI single by Ard in the eighth inning. Ard finished the night with a 3-for-5 performance, with a pair of doubles and three runs driven in.
The bullpen held strong for Clinton, as Blake Holovach, Mark Bordonaro and Richard Vargas combined for five scoreless innings. Bordonaro picked up his second win, and Vargas collected his second save.
The LumberKings and River Bandits continue their three-game series with game two on Thursday night. Clinton goes for the series win with left-hander Scott DeCecco (9-8, 4.42) and Quad Cities counters with right-hander Lance McCullers (6-5, 2.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM CT at Ashford University Field.
