Claws Win in 14

July 26, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LEXINGTON, KY-Fidel Hernandez hit a 14th inning SAC fly to bring home Welinson Baez and Lakewood held on for a 6-5 win in Lexington on Thursday night.

The BlueClaws (18-15) picked up their first win on their road trip after dropping the first five (five was a season- high losing streak for Lakewood).

Baez, with one out in the 14th, tripled off of Sergio Severino (3-5) and Hernandez drove him in with a long fly ball to left field.

Zach Sterner (1-0) finished off three shutout innings for his first Lakewood win.

After Lakewood's Sergio Escalona gave up just two runs over seven innings, Brian Schlitter allowed a three-run home run to Jordan Parraz (13) to tie the game at five in the 8th. When Parraz singled in the 14th, he completed the cycle in his 6th at-bat.

All three runs were unearned, as the blast came with two outs and the first batter of the inning, Brandon Caipen, reached on an error by Fidel Hernandez.

After the game was tied, the bullpens went to work. Neither team had a base-runner in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th innings. Santo Luis threw shutout ball from the 7th thru 9th innings for Lexington, giving way to Kyle DeYoung, who threw three perfect innings, and he gave way to Sergio Severino in the 13th.

Meanwhile, RJ Swindle came on for Lakewood in the 9th and retired all nine that he faced before Sterner came on in the 12th.

Lakewood got a leadoff single in the 13th by Adrian Cardenas but Doug Morales bunted into a 1-6-3 double play.

All this came on a night when Lakewood had a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The first three Lakewood batters all scored: Quintin Berry on an Adrian Cardenas single, Julian Williams on an E4, and Cardenas on a Tuffy Gosewisch single. The BlueClaws, who had scored 11 runs on the first five games of the road-trip, added another when Hernandez drove in Gus Milner with a ground out.

That looked to be more than enough for Sergio Escalona, who allowed an unearned run in the 2nd and another run in the 4th, but made it through seven total and appeared headed for his first BlueClaws win, but the Legends tied it in the 8th.

Legends starter Doug Arguello gave up five runs (three earned) over six and gave way to Santo Luis, who struck out five over three shutout innings.

Game three of the four-game set is on Friday night at 7:05. Lakewood will throw RHP Darren Byrd (5-8, 4.86) against Lexington RHP Casey Hudspeth (5-5, 4.92).
