July 14, 2008 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

SANTOS AND THE REVOLUTION IN SUPERLIGA WEEK FOR CHIVAS USA: The Red-and-White will play two difficult SuperLiga 2008 matches this week in Southern California as the team looks to pass through the group stage of the tournament. First up, Chivas USA hosts Santos Laguna, the reigning champions of the Mexican First Division, on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. The Red-and-White then host the New England Revolution in Chivas USA's first-ever official match in Orange County, to be played on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. After a 2-1 loss to Pachuca in an exciting SuperLiga opener on Sunday, Chivas USA will be fighting for results in both games as it looks to advance to the semifinals and a potential matchup with sister team Chivas de Guadalajara. Tickets for both games can be purchased by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visiting www.cdchivasusa.com.

CHIVAS USA FALLS IN THRILLING SUPERLIGA OPENER: Despite earning an early penalty kick and scoring the first goal of the match, Chivas USA could not hold on against reigning SuperLiga champions Pachuca, falling by a final score of 2-1. Chivas USA defender Claudio Suárez sent the keeper the wrong way but hit the post with his early penalty kick, but in the 16th minute Ante Razov, scoring in his fourth straight match, gave the Red-and-White a 1-0 lead off an assist from Sacha Kljestan. The lead lasted just seven minutes before Pachuca struck back; a Gerardo Rodriguez free kick was poked in from close range by Bruno Marioni to tie the game. Pachuca took the lead just before halftime, when Gabriel Caballero headed home another Rodriguez cross. Both teams had chances in the second half, but Pachuca held on for the 2-1 win. In the other Group B match on Sunday, the New England Revolution defeated Santos Laguna 1-0. Chivas USA plays Santos this Wednesday at The Home Depot Center at 7:00 p.m. PT before taking on the Revolution on Sunday at Titan Stadium in Fullerton at 5:00 p.m. PT. Tickets for the SuperLiga matches can be purchased by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visiting www.cdchivasusa.com.

BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES ENDS IN A DRAW: Just three days before taking on Pachuca in the SuperLiga, Chivas USA squared off against its in-house rivals, the Los Angeles Galaxy, and finished an intense match with a 1-1 draw. Ante Razov opened the scoring with a brilliant strike from 20 yards in the 15th minute of the game, one-timing a pass from Sacha Kljestan over Galaxy keeper Steve Cronin and into the top corner of the net. The lead held until the 72nd minute when Edson Buddle equalized from close range for his 11th goal of the year. Brad Guzan, in perhaps his final match for Chivas USA, made three saves, including on in the dying moments to preserve the tie, and Sacha Kljestan had a header strike the post with just minutes to play in the game. The two teams will meet in the third and final Honda Super Clásico of the 2008 season on August 14 at The Home Depot Center, which is Chivas USA's next home MLS match.

VOTE ANTE RAZOV FOR GOAL OF THE WEEK: For the second straight week, an amazing strike by Ante Razov has been nominated for Major League Soccer Goal of the Week. Razov won the competition a week ago for his free kick from nearly 30 yards found its way over the wall for the only goal in a 1-0 win against San Jose. This week, Razov has been nominated for his one-timed strike over Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin in the 15th minute of a 1-1 draw with Los Angeles. The goal was the 113th of the veteran's career, and his fourth of the season. It was also the third consecutive MLS game in which Razov has scored. To vote for Razov's goal, visit the Audio/Video section of MLSnet.com and follow the Goal of the Week link to check out video of the strike!

CHIVAS USA AND MLS AGREE TO FEE WITH ASTON VILLA FOR BRAD GUZAN: Chivas USA and Major League Soccer have agreed to a fee with Aston Villa for the transfer of goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Guzan's move to the English Premier League side is pending approval of his British work permit.
