Chivas USA Update: Preseason camp opens

CHIVAS USA TO OPEN PRESEASON CAMP ON JANUARY 28 AT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER: Following a two-month offseason, Chivas USA will resume preseason training next Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 10:00 a.m. at The Home Depot Center. The preseason roster continues to take shape, as Chivas USA added four players on 2009 MLS SuperDraft day last Thursday in St. Louis, when the team selected three players and traded for veteran defender Ante Jazic from the LA Galaxy. The Red-and-White made Wake Forest University midfielder Michael Lahoud its first-round pick in the SuperDraft, then traded its second-round pick (19th overall) in exchange for Jazic and the Galaxy's third- and fourth-round picks. With those two selections, Chivas USA took forward Kyle Christensen from the University of Denver (35th overall), and Jamie Franks of Wake Forest (49th overall). A preseason roster and practice schedule will be distributed next week.

CHIVAS USA U-18 TEAM TO TRAVEL TO GUADALAJARA FOR COPA CHIVAS: The Chivas USA Under-18 Team will travel to Guadalajara tomorrow for its second consecutive participation in the annual Copa Internacional Chivas Comex 2009 (International Chivas Comex Cup), one of the most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in the Western Hemisphere. The Copa Chivas will run from Jan. 24 to Feb. 1 in Guadalajara, and will feature some of the strongest youth sides from around the world, bringing together 24 teams from 13 different countries. Participants include the youth national teams from Brazil and Japan, as well as some of the most storied clubs in South America and Europe, including Spain's Real Madrid, River Plate from Argentina, and Mexican powerhouses Chivas Guadalajara and América. A full release, including the team's roster and schedule, will be distributed tomorrow.

KLJESTAN AND BORNSTEIN TRAIN WITH U.S. NATIONAL TEAM AHEAD OF SATURDAY'S FRIENDLY VS. SWEDEN: Chivas USA players Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan are currently training with the United States National Team at The Home Depot Center ahead of a friendly against Sweden this Saturday, Jan. 24, also at The Home Depot Center. Kljestan, who returns on Thursday from a week-long training stint with Scottish champions Celtic Football Club, enjoyed a successful 2008 in which he featured in eight matches for the U.S., including six World Cup qualifiers. The Huntington Beach native tallied two assists for the full team and scored two goals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, his efforts earning him the 2008 U.S. Soccer Young Male Athlete of the Year award. Bornstein was also with the United States for its most recent World Cup Qualifier, a 2-0 win over Guatemala on Nov. 19, and has a total of 13 appearances with the United States.

GUADALAJARA UPDATE: ‘PANCHITO' MAKES LEAGUE DEBUT: Chivas de Guadalajara opened its 2009 Clausura season with a thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Cruz Azul, with former Chivas USA star Francisco ‘Panchito' Mendoza making his Mexican First Division debut with Guadalajara. Mendoza entered the match in the 74th minute and had been on the field less than two minutes before Cruz Azul's Carlos Bonet received a straight red card for a strong challenge on Mendoza. Guadalajara's Carlos Ochoa continued his scoring streak from InterLiga with two goals, and Amaury Ponce added an equalizer for the Rojiblancos, who will next host Tecos on Saturday, Jan. 24 on Matchday 2 of the Clausura season.

BORNSTEIN EARNS ‘HOMETOWN HERO AWARD' AT LOS ANGELES SPORTS FANS CHOICE AWARDS: Chivas USA defender and Los Alamitos product Jonathan Bornstein received the Hometown Hero Award - given annually to Los Angeles professional athletes who dedicate their time and support to local causes - at the 9th Annual Los Angeles Sports Fans Choice Awards last Tuesday night at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. Bornstein was nominated for his involvement with several causes, including the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, which raises money for children and families affected by cancer; the Wednesday's Child Program, which helps increase adoptions of foster children; and the Passback Program, which donates soccer equipment to teams and players in need all over the world. The 24-year-old UCLA alum was also honored this past October as Chivas USA's 2008 U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year for his work in the community.
