Chivas USA Already Training in Philly

July 8, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

Chivas USA traveled today to Philadelphia, Pa., the team's final destination in their 10-day tour. The Red-and-White have already stolen two draws from two of the best sides in each conference, FC Dallas in the West and Montreal Impact in the East.

The Goats arrived in the City of Brotherly Love at noon, and immediately headed to the team's hotel where they will stay until their next game against Philadelphia Union on Friday, July 12, at 4:30 p.m. (PT).

The Rojiblancos held a regenerative session at the hotel with the objective of recovering from the physical fatigue that came from the game against Montreal and from the trip.

The session kicked off with stretching and a light jog before getting the group split in two. The players who saw action in last night's game went to the gym before relaxing in the pool. Meanwhile, the other group who didn't play went on to exercise with the ball and then headed to the hotel's gym to do weight stations.

Chivas USA will return to their normal training tomorrow, but this week from the soccer fields at Temple University.

Kennedy and the Red-and-White Continue to Build Confidence on the Road

With Sunday's 1-1 draw against the Montreal Impact, Chivas USA have now strung together three consecutive results for the first time since March and have turned their current three-game road trip into positive points.

In the club' s fifth game under Head Coach José Luis Real, the Rojiblancos are unbeaten in their last three matches, averaging a little over one goal allowed during that span.

Goalkeeper and captain Dan Kennedy recorded his first clean sheet at FC Dallas to begin the 10-day, three-city tour, and Sunday came up with huge stops as he is well known for in the Red-and-White's first-ever match in Stade Saputo.

"Every point is important in this League," said Kennedy. "We're at a stage right now where we are growing up underneath a new coach. There has been a lot of change so you can see each game we're growing a little bit. We should now go into Philadelphia and take [Sunday's] performance into consideration and have confidence knowing that we can get three points on the road."

Perhaps no one has benefited more since the arrival of "El G-ero" than Kennedy. The former Chivas Guadalajara manager has implemented a more conventional four-man backline that has been stingy of late.

The combination of a more compact defensive approach and the net minder's stellar play in goal has kept the Goats in games and in striking distance in the last few matches. The squad now looks to round out a successful road trip with a victory at Philadelphia to extend their unbeaten streak to four for the second time this season and deliver Real's first League win.

In addition to the defense's solid play of late, the arrival of newly-signed defender Carlos Bocanegra will further bolster the defensive line with his renowned skill and leadership. Bocanegra is a two-time MLS Defender of the Year while playing with the Chicago Fire and has worn the captain's armband for the US Men's National Team and he will add his defensive prowess to the backline.

For now, however, Kennedy is pleased with the results the current squad is producing and even more pleased with the transformation under Real.

"We have three road games and [Sunday's] was our second one in just a few days," added Kennedy. "So to come out and put in that kind of gritty performance is something to be proud of for the guys. Before every game we're coming in thinking we need to make this a good contest and we surely did that."

Purdy and El Salvador draw with Trinidad & Tobago

Chivas USA defender Steven Purdy and El Salvador's National Team today kicked off their participation in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In their first match in this international competition, La Selecta and Purdy finished with a 2-2 draw against Trinidad & Tobago at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ.

Purdy played the full 90 minutes and earned his 14th cap with the Salvadoran side that suffered a lot of pressure from the Soca Warriors. T&T opened up the scoreboard with a goal by Keon Daniel in the 10th minute.

Rodolfo Zelaya was the star for El Salvador as he scored the two goals for the national side in the 21st and later on in the 69th minute to take the lead. La Selecta didn't stay ahead for long, as just four minutes later, Kenwyne Jones scored for T&T, evening the final score and the division of points.

La Selecta and Purdy will now face Honduras' National Team on Friday, July 12 and will end their group stage participation by meeting Haiti three days later. The best two teams in each group and the two best third-place teams will advance to the Quarterfinal Round.
