Chihuahuas Win 5-2 Sunday to Avoid Sweep

July 17, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
El Paso Chihuahuas News Release

The El Paso Chihuahuas defeated the Nashville Sounds 5-2 Sunday to avoid being swept for the second time this season. Michael Kelly allowed only one earned run in 5.2 innings, while 2014-2015 Chihuahua Chris Smith suffered the loss against his former team.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Hunter Renfroe hit a three-run home run over the left field wall, his league-leading 22nd of the season. The score was 3-2 El Paso in the bottom of the eighth when Diego Goris grounded a two-run single up the middle to pad the Chihuahuas' lead. The insurance runs proved valuable when Nashville loaded the bases in the ninth inning before Michael Dimock came in for a two-out save. The Sounds left seven runners on base in the final four innings Sunday.

El Paso had three outfield assists in the win and the team now leads all Triple-A clubs in that category. The Chihuahuas have been swept only one time in 2016 - a three-game mid-April series loss in Tacoma.
