Chiefs Win 5-3 Saturday and Eliminated From Playoffs

Peoria, IL - Even though the Peoria Chiefs won their eighth-straight game with a 5-3 victory Saturday night against the Burlington Bees at Spring Green Field, they are still eliminated from the playoffs. Due to Kane County's 2-0 win vs. Wisconsin, the Chiefs are now 38-30, a seasonbest eight games over .500 with one game left in the half.

The Chiefs struck first in the bottom of the third against Burlington starter Tim Melville. With one out, Junior Lake singled to left and advanced to third on Josh Harrison's 16th double of the season. David Macias hit his seventh RBI of the season with a ground out to second that plated Lake to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Burlington to come back and tie the game against Chiefs starter Chris Carpenter. Nick Francis hit a solo shot to center field on a 2-1 pitch to even the score 1-1 after four innings.

Peoria regained the lead in the fifth, scoring three runs with just one hit. Nelson Perez led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on Mario Mercedes' single up the middle. Lake hit a sacrifice bunt and all the runners were safe after a throwing error by Melville, allowing Perez to score. Harrison reached on a fielding error by Chase Fonatine at third base, plating Mercedes and advancing Lake to third. Macias hit his second RBI groundout on the night, scoring Lake and giving the Chiefs a 4-1 advantage. The Chiefs tacked on another run in their half of the sixth after Ryan Flaherty began the inning with a triple and was brought home on Perez's double to right to make it 5-1.

Burlington tallied two runs against reliever Alberto Cabrera in the eighth. Fernando Garcia drew a walk and was out at second on a fielders' choice with Jarrod Dyson reaching first. Nick Van Stratten was credited with a RBI triple when Macias misplayed his flyball to center. Van Stratten then scored on a wild pitch by Cabrera to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3.

Carpenter (4-3) gave up one run on five hits in his six innings of work. The right-hander walked two and struck out three. Cabrera threw 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Chris Huseby earned his seventh save of the season throwing a spotless 2/3 inning in the ninth.
