Chiefs Win 5-2 Sunday

Fort Wayne, IN - The Peoria Chiefs used a five-run third inning and a grand slam from Taylor Davis to knock off the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-2 Sunday afternoon to even the series at one win each. The Chiefs are now 10-14 heading into the series finale Monday morning at Parkview Field.

Brad Zapenas led off the top of the third with a double to left off Matt Wisler and moved to third as Pin-Chieh Chen reached on an error. Zeke DeVoss drew a walk to load the bases and the TinCaps got an out at the plate on a fielders' choice off the bat of Wes Darvill. Rafael Lopez put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to left before Ryan Cuneo drew a walk to once again load the bases. Davis worked a full count before launching a grand slam over the bleachers in left field and onto the concourse for a 5-0 Chiefs lead. The homer was the first of his professional career and the second grand slam for the Chiefs in the last six games.

Ben Wells kept the TinCaps off the board through 5 1/3 innings and Kyler Burke got through the next 1 2/3 innings unscathed as the Chiefs took a 5-0 lead into the eighth inning. Jace Peterson started the bottom of the eighth with a walk and beat a throw from DeVoss to second base on a grounder hit by Justin Miler. Casey McElroy loaded the bases with a single to right and Travis Whitmore put the TinCaps on the board with a two-run single to right. Burke struck out Duanel Jones for the first out of the inning and induced a 6-4-3 double play from Austin Hedges to end the inning with Peoria on top 5-2.

Wells allowed just two hits over 5 1/3 innings on Sunday. The right-hander walked three and struck out three. Burke allowed two runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings for his first save of the season and second of his career. He walked two and struck out four.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Taylor Davis (DH) - Davis hit a grand slam, doubled and walked to reach base three times in four plate appearances Sunday afternoon. He drove home four and collected two extra base hits with six total bases as the DH.
