Chiefs Win 2-0 Friday

August 7, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs got an unearned run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh en route to a 2-0 win over the Fort Wayne Tincaps Friday night. The win is the Chiefs ninth straight at home and improves Peoria to 61-48 overall and 28-13 in the second half and, coupled with a Kane County loss, moves the Chiefs to within two games of first in the Midwest League's Western Division.

The Chiefs got three runners on base in the first against Tincaps starter Dinelson Lamet but never got a runner past first base. Darren Seferina led off with a single, and Paul DeJong and Oscar Mercado drew walks, but all three were caught trying to steal second base during the next at-bat.

The game was scoreless through 5 innings before the Chiefs started the scoring in the sixth inning against Lamet. DeJong led off and was hit by a pitch after a dropped foul popup had allowed his at-bat to continue. Harrison Bader walked, and Nick Thompson ripped a double down the left field line against new Tincaps hurler T.J. Weir to put the Chiefs on top 1-0.

Peoria added a run in the seventh inning against Weir. Kenny Peoples-Walls led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Massi Jr. Peoples-Walls moved to third on a groundout by Seferina and scored when DeJong reached base on a Tincaps error for the 2-0 Chiefs lead.

Pearce (8-9) got the win for the Chiefs, going 6 1/3 shutout innings and allowing just six hits, striking out two and walking two to snap his Midwest League-record walk-less streak at 54 1/3 innings. Cody Schumacher came on in relief and pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up one hit and striking out one. Kyle Grana pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save in as many nights, striking out the side in order.
