Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Peoria Chiefs broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-3 Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. That offset Jon Perrin's start for Wisconsin. Perrin set new single-game highs as a professional with nine strikeouts over seven innings, but had a no decision in the game.

Peoria (4-4) got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Jon Perrin. The Rattler right-hander retired the first nine batters he faced in the game, but gave up four straight hits to start the fourth. Eliezer Alvarez singled and stole second to lead-off the inning. Rattlers second baseman Tucker Neuhaus was covering second on the play. He went backhand the throw on the third base side of the bag and there appeared to be contact between the helmet of Alvarez and the throwing hand of Neuhaus. Neuhaus left the game with an injury to his right hand and Luis Aviles replaced him on the field.

Edmundo Sosa singled sharply to left when action resumed and the Chiefs had runners at the corners. Magneuris Sierra swung at the first pitch of his at bat and singled to knock in Peoria's first run of the game. RJ Dennard would flare a single to shallow center and the Chiefs had the bases loaded.

Perrin looked like he might get out of the inning as he got catcher Jose Godoy to send a grounder to short for an apparent double play. But the throw to second was missed and two runs scored to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin (3-6) struggled against hard-throwing Cardinals prospect Sandy Alcantara. The Chiefs starting pitcher allowed just two hits through his first six innings. But, the Rattlers rallied after the seventh inning stretch.

Monte Harrison drew a leadoff walk. Aviles was hit by a pitch. Max McDowell drew a walk and suddenly the Rattlers had the bases loaded with no outs and the Chiefs went to the bullpen.

David Denson was at the plate to face reliever Sam De La Cruz when a pitch got away for a passed ball to let Harrison score Wisconsin's first run. Then, Denson drew a walk to reload the bases. Jake Gatewood sent a sharp single to left to knock in Aviles and keep the bases loaded.

Elvis Rubio reached on a fielder's choice and McDowell scored the tying run. Wisconsin had runners at second and third with one out, but De La Cruz got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.

Perrin went back out for the top of the seventh inning and recorded two strikeouts to blow past his previous professional single-game high. The right-hander out of Oklahoma State University has pitched twelve innings and had 14 strikeouts with no walks in two starts this season.

The Chiefs broke the tie in the top of the ninth inning against reliever Quintin Torres-Costa. The lefty from the University of Hawaii had come on in the eighth and retired the first four Peoria batters he faced, but issued a four-pitch walk to Brian O'Keefe. Godoy would single and the Chiefs had runners at first and second. Vaughn Bryan, who had been 0-for-5 with three strikeouts to this point of the series, lined a double down the third base line to knock in O'Keefe. Casey Turgeon added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly and the Chiefs were up 5-3.

Denson doubled with one away in the bottom of the ninth inning against Landon Beck, but Denson was the only Rattler to reach in the ninth.

Game three of the series is Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Drake Owenby (0-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria will start Ryan Helsley (0-0, 0.00) on Saturday. Game time is 1:05pm.

All fans to attend this game will receive a special double bobblehead that features Timber Rattlers mascots Fang and Whiffer courtesy of Dairy Queen and Pepsi. The first of 18 appearances by characters from PBS Kids' shows will happen on this day, too. Kids will want to meet Buddy from Dinosaur Train. After the game, children 14 and under may run the bases courtesy of Tundraland as part of North Shore Bank Family Day.
