Chiefs shut out River Bandits 2-0 Monday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs shutout the Quad Cities River Bandits 2-0 Monday night at O'Brien Field. Peoria starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx had his fifth quality start in his six starts in a Chiefs uniform this season, throwing seven shutout innings. The first-place Chiefs are now 35-21 in the second half and 73-52 overall with a playoff spot magic number of five.

The Chiefs got on the board early in the first. David Macias singled to begin the inning and with one out, advanced to second on a single by Rebel Ridling. With the second out recorded, D.J. LeMahieu singled up the middle to score Macias and give Peoria a 1-0 lead.

Bibens-Dirkx cruised through seven innings with the Bandits only really threatening twice. The visitors had runners on first and second in the second and third innings before Bibens-Dirkx escaped trouble. At one point he recorded nine straight ground ball outs from Quad Cities hitters before leaving after seven.

Quad Cities threatened in the eighth, with two on and two out. Manolin De Leon replaced Bibens-Dirkx in the top of the eighth and got Guillermo Toribio to fly out to left-field. D'Marcus Ingram grounded out for the second out of the inning before Jermaine Curtis reached on a fielding error by Junior Lake. Rich Racobaldo singled to advance Curtis to second and Ryde Rodriguez came in to pinch-run for Curtis. With runners on first and second, closer Chris Huseby was called upon and struck out Xavier Scruggs on three pitches.

Peoria got an insurance run in the eighth. Michael Brenly led off the inning with a double and two outs later, scored on a single by Macias to give the Chiefs a 2-0 advantage heading into the ninth.

Bibens-Dirkx (6-1) threw seven shutout innings while giving up four hits, issuing one walk and striking out six. De Leon threw 2/3 innings and gave up one hit. Huseby earned his 18th save of the season, throwing 1 1/3 innings, giving up one hit while striking out two. Quad Cities starter Schneider threw seven innings while giving up one run on four hits. He struck out eight and retired 15 Chiefs in a row.
