Chiefs Score Season High to Beat Knights

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, set their season high for runs in a 12-4 win over the Charlotte Knights on Monday night. The Chiefs tallied five runs in the first inning and six in the third inning to break the game open from the start en route to a series split.

Syracuse (9-15) used two-out offense to put up a crooked number in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and two outs, designated hitter Jim Negrych came through in his first at-bat with the Chiefs this season. He lined a 2-0 fastball up the middle for a two-run single. Jarrett Hoffpauir then pounded a 3-2 pitch to center to score Michaels and give Syracuse a 3-0 lead. Carlos Rivero followed with a broken-bat flair that fell into shallow right field. His single brought home Negrych for the Chiefs' fourth first-inning run. Carlos Maldonado produced Syracuse's fourth straight run-scoring single, driving in Hoffpauir on a blooper to right.

Charlotte (13-12) answered with a two-out rally of its own in the top of the second. Josh Phegley snuck a two-strike, two-out offering down the left field line for a double. Jordan Danks pounded the very next pitch off the left field wall for another double to make the score 5-1.

But Syracuse broke the game open in the third inning. Mark Teahen's bases-loaded single to left field scored Maldonado and Corey Brown to put the Chiefs up 7-1. Three batters later, Negrych hit a ground ball to second base. Charlotte's Tyler Kuhn bobbled the ball and threw it wide of first base, allowing Josh Johnson and Teahen to score two more Chiefs runs. Hoffpauir followed with his second run-scoring single of the game, bringing home Brett Carroll and Negrych to give the Chiefs an 11-1 lead after three innings.

Syracuse scored one more run in the eighth inning, as Jason Michaels crossed home on a fielding error by shortstop Ozzie Martinez - the eighth Knights error of the game.

Chiefs starter John Lannan twirled his best start of the season in the win. The left-hander allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out six to pick up his second win of the season.

Chiefs reliever Pat Lehman allowed three runs over two innings to close out the game for Syracuse.

The Chiefs head to Buffalo Tuesday to start a six-game road trip. Zach Duke is scheduled to start for Syracuse, while Matt Harvey is set to counter for the Bisons.
