Chiefs Reduce Royals to Rubble for Third Straight Win

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Kris Mayotte turned aside 18 shots and Ryan Garlock's second period goal proved to be the decider as the Johnstown Chiefs defeated the Reading Royals on Friday by a score of 4-2.

The Chiefs (6-3-0-0) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just 1:37 in when a pair of nifty passes from Ryan Del Monte and Mike Bartlett left Matt Robinson in front of an open net. It was the fastest goal to begin a game so far for the Chiefs this season.

For the rest of the period, however, Royals goaltender James Reimer kept the Chiefs off the board. Ryan Garlock and Mike Knight each had chances to extend the lead, but Reimer made a nifty glove save to deny Garlock and Knight's shot hit the post.

On the other end, Chiefs goaltender Kris Mayotte faced just five shots, as the Chiefs offense kept the visiting Royals in their own zone for much of the period.

In the second frame, the Royals came out with a new goaltender, as Danny Taylor replaced Reimer between the pipes. Reading's Matt Herneisen chopped a rebound by Mayotte just 57 seconds in to tie the game at 1-1, and it briefly seemed that the goalie change had fired up the visiting Royals.

But David Schulz reclaimed the lead for Johnstown at 8:04, blasting a wrist shot by Taylor. And Ryan Garlock gave the Chiefs a 3-1 lead just 2:17 later, picking up his third of the season with help from Andrew Sarauer and Mark McCutcheon.

The Chiefs again outshot the Royals, holding the visitors to just five shots while peppering Taylor with 13 for the period. This time, however, Mayotte needed to be strong, as he denied both Ned Lukacevic and Kirk MacDonald at point-blank range during the period to keep Reading down two goals.

The first half of the third period was fought to a stalemate-the operative word being, "fought." Garlock squared off with Brock Hooton, and later Jason Spence took on Kevin Harvey. Both resulted in Chiefs victories that fired up the home crowd.

And just 40 seconds after the second fight, Petr Pohl fired a backhand by Taylor off a breakaway to extend the lead to 4-1. Del Monte sprung Pohl behind the defense for his second assist of the game.

Reading attempted to mount a comeback, as Mac Faulkner beat Mayotte stick side to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Royals later drew a penalty and Taylor was pulled for the extra attacker. But Mayotte fought off the 6-on-4 advantage and allowed nothing more, ensuring the Chiefs' sixth victory of the year and third in a row.

Mayotte made 18 saves on 20 shots, while the Chiefs' power play was 0-for-1.
