Chiefs Pummel Bulls After Ten-Run First

July 15, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs blew out the Durham Bulls on Friday, 12-1, at NBT Bank Stadium. Matt den Dekker hit a grand slam in an explosive ten-run first inning. It marked the first Syracuse ten-run inning since July 11, 2014. The win was the Chiefs' seventh in their last nine games.

Again, Syracuse (44-48) kicked things off with ten runs in the first, nine of which against starter Jacob Faria. Caleb Ramsey led off with a single into center field, followed by consecutive walks to Brian Goodwin and Matt Skole. After a mound visit from pitching coach Kyle Snyder, Christopher Bostick singled into left field to score Ramsey. In the ensuing at-bat, den Dekker hit his second grand slam against Durham this season, over the right field fence to put Syracuse up 5-0. Pedro Severino and Zach Collier followed with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. After Adrian Sanchez made the inning's first out, Jose Lozada hit an infield single to shortstop to load the bases. The leadoff hitter Ramsey stepped back up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Severino. With two outs and runners on first and second, Goodwin hit a line-drive single to left field, scoring Collier to give the Chiefs a 7-0 advantage. That marked the end of the night for Faria. The Durham starter's ERA rose from 0.60 entering the night to 4.60, after allowing seven earned runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Mark Sappington came on in relief and immediately fell victim to his defense. Skole hit a ground ball that went between the legs of second baseman Jake Hager and under the glove of right fielder Eury Perez, the two errors scoring both Lozada and Goodwin. Bostick then smacked a line-drive triple which brought home Skole. The inning finally came to an end after a den Dekker strikeout in the ensuing at-bat, with the Chiefs up 10-0.

Syracuse got back on the board in the fourth off reliever Adam Kolarek. Severino opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a groundout. Sanchez then singled to right field, plating Severino to put the Chiefs up 11-0.

Billy Gardner's bunch crossed the plate once again in the following inning, this time against Neil Wagner. With one out, Goodwin and Skole hit back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. After a groundout, den Dekker singled to center field, plating Goodwin to give Syracuse a 12-0 advantage.

Durham (40-54) scored its only run in the seventh off Syracuse starter Austin Voth. With one out, Johnny Field doubled to left-center field. Following a pop out, Jake Hager hit a double of his own to left, scoring Field to make the tally 12-1.

Voth finished after the seventh, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out five. The outing lowered his ERA to 3.11.

The Chiefs return to action Saturday night for the third game of a four-game series against the Bulls. A.J. Cole is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite of Justin Marks for Durham. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
