Chiefs Drop Series Finale to Bulls

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Durham Bulls Sunday afternoon, 8-4, in the final game of a four-game series at NBT Bank Stadium. J.P. Arencibia went 3 for 5 with two home runs, a double and three RBIs for the Bulls. Brian Goodwin tallied three hits for the Chiefs in the win.

Durham (42-54) scored the game's first run in the second. Arencibia opened the inning with a home run estimated at 393 feet off Syracuse starter Paolo Espino, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

The Bulls crossed the plate twice in the fourth, again courtesy of Arencibia. Jake Hager led off with a single into center field, followed by a Jaff Decker walk. With runners on first and second and no outs, Arencibia hit a line-drive double to right-center field, clearing the bases to give Durham a 3-0 lead.

Syracuse (44-50) scored for the first time in the bottom of the inning. Den Dekker led off the inning with a long home run over the family fun park in right field off Schultz. The home run was his seventh of the season and cut the lead to 3-1.

Syracuse scored again in the sixth. Casey Coleman came on in relief and Christopher Bostick greeted him with an infield single to third base. Three batters later, Zach Collier singled advancing Bostick to third base. Bostick then scored on a passed ball on Arencibia to make the tally 3-2.

Durham followed with five consecutive runs, two of which scored in the seventh. Daniel Robertson led off the inning with a line-drive single to center field off reliever Koda Glover. Eury Perez sacrifice bunted in the ensuing at-bat, advancing Roberston to second base. Johnny Field followed with a walk. Hager then hit a bases-clearing double to left-center field, pushing the Bulls' lead to 5-2.

Arencibia continued his hot-hitting in the eighth. With Glover still on the mound, the Durham catcher led off with his second home run of the game, and third of the series, to put the Bulls on top 6-2.

The Bulls tacked on two more runs in the ninth off reliever Sam Runion. Robertson again started the inning with a single, this time to left field. Perez was hit by a pitch in the ensuing at-bat and Field walked to follow, loading the bases. Robertson then scored on a wild pitch from Runion. Then, following a strikeout, Decker grounded out to second base, plating Perez to make the score 8-2.

The Chiefs added two runs in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Jhonatan Solano singled into right field off right-handed reliever Danny Farquhar. Following a ground out, Ramsey reached on an error by the shortstop Robertson. Goodwin followed with a double to deep center field, scoring both Solano and Ramsey to cut the lead to 8-4.

The Chiefs return to action Monday night for the first of a three-game series against the Gwinnett Braves. Reynaldo Lopez is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite of Roberto Hernandez for Gwinnett. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
