Iowa Cubs News Release
New Orleans, LA - The Chicago Cubs released IF Augie Ojeda today. The veteran infielder signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent in January, but was limited this season by back spasms that started in spring training and held him out of regular game action for two months.
Ojeda joined the I-Cubs on May 31 and hit .200 with three RBI in 50 at-bats over 18 games. Ojeda was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 13th round of the 1996 draft out of the University of Tennessee. The Cubs acquired him in a trade on December 14, 1999 and he joined Iowa for the 2000 season before making his Major League debut with Chicago. He would play for both the I-Cubs and Chicago Cubs in 2002 and 2003 as well. He has also played in the big leagues with Minnesota (2004) and Arizona (2007-10). In 502 big league games, Ojeda hit .234 with seven home runs and 81 RBI.
The I-Cubs continue their series in New Orleans tonight at 6:00. Tonight's game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:40.
