Charleston Battery signs Cuban striker Lester Moré
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery has signed Cuban forward Lester Moré for the 2008 USL First Division season. Moré defected from the Cuban national team last July during the 2007 Gold Cup; he is the all time leading goalscorer for Cuba and made his debut for the national team at the age of 16. The Battery has also signed forward Randi Patterson; Patterson was an All-American at UNC Greensboro and spent his rookie season with MLS's New York Red Bulls.

A native of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, Moré made his debut for the national team in 1996 and was a member of the squad at the 1998, 2003, 2005 and 2007 Gold Cup Finals. He also played in 13 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the 1998, 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup's.
At a club level Moré, 5-11, 170lbs., 28 yrs., has played for FC Ciego de Ávila in the Cuban First Division where he scored 32 goals in 2006, he also played for FC Santa Clara at the end of the 2007 season. Before he left Cuba Moré was attending the Instituto Nacional de Deportes, where he was majoring in Physical Education.
Forward Randi Patterson comes to the Charleston Battery from Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls. Patterson spent his rookie season with New York in 2007 but did not see action in any games.
Originally from Hackensack, NJ, Patterson 5-9. 170 lbs., 23 yrs spent four seasons at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he was a two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year and NCSAA All-American selection. He finished his college career with 61 goals and 19 assists.
Mark Watson assists Canadian Olympic team
Charleston Battery assistant coach Mark Watson will serve as an assistant coach during upcoming Olympic qualifiers; Watson will return to Charleston after the qualification matches conclude.
Canada plays Mexico on March 12, Haiti on March 14 and concludes the three-match group stage on March 16 against Guatemala. Canada's group stage matches will take place at Home Depot Center, LA. The eight-team tournament features two groups of four with Cuba, Honduras, Panama, and the host U.S. playing in the second group. The champion and runner-up will qualify for the Summer Olympics in Beijing.
