Centerfielder Greg Allen Receives Rawlings Gold Glove Award
April 25, 2017 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OHIO- Akron RubberDucks centerfielder Greg Allen was presented with his 2016 Rawlings Gold Glove Award for defensive excellence by Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O'Conner and Eastern League President Joe McEacharn prior to the start of tonight's game against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
Allen, 24, was one of just nine total players chosen from the 10 domestic-based, full-season Minor Leagues and the only player selected from the Cleveland Indians organization. In 2016, the centerfielder had a .994 fielding percentage and a career-high 15 assists in 128 games split between Single-A Lynchburg and Double-A Akron. He was originally selected by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of San Diego State University.
"Some of the plays he made last year were unbelievable," said RubberDucks manager Mark Budzinski, who managed Allen in Lynchburg last season. "He's got everyone's attention in the (Indians) organization with his defensive prowess."
The nine winners were originally announced in September, when O'Conner stated, "These players displayed extraordinary skills at their positions this season, and on behalf of Minor League Baseball, I congratulate them on this outstanding accomplishment."
Rawlings rekindled the Minor League version of the award in 2011 after an almost 50-year hiatus, and Allen received a Gold Glove Award that is modeled after the iconic award given to Major League Baseball's top defensive players during the 2017 season.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and defending Eastern League champions. The 2017 season is the franchise's 21st since moving to Akron and the franchise's 20th year at Canal Park.
