Sacramento River Cats News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Eric Sogard snapped an 8-8 tie with a solo shot to lead off the top of the 13th inning Tuesday night, giving Sacramento its fourth-straight win, a 9-8 victory over Tacoma at Cheney Stadium.
After trailing 7-2, Tacoma used back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh to come back and take an 8-7 lead over the Cats. But Collin Cowgill answered in the eighth with a solo home run-one of his four hits on the night-to tie the game at eighth and set the stage for extra innings.
In extra frames, Chris Ray and Travis Banwart combined to toss three scoreless innings before Merkin Valdez came on in the 13th to pick up his fourth save of the season, stranding the potential game-tying run at third base. Banwart (6-3) earned the win, striking out three batters in two perfect innings.
Tacoma reliever Steven Hensley (1-4) suffered the defeat after allowing Sogard's homer in the 13th.
Cowgill led the charge offensively for Sacramento, finishing 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. Sogard hit two solo home runs, while Mike Taylor chipped in with three hits, two RBIs and a solo home run of his own.
Tacoma and Sacramento continue the series Wednesday evening, when the River Cats hand the ball to RHP Dan Straily (3-2, 1.09 ERA), professional baseball's current strikeout leader. The Rainiers will counter with LHP Danny Hultzen (1-1, 4.24 ERA), with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. PT. from Cheney Stadium.
The River Cats return to Raley Field on Friday, July 20, for a Toyota Family Value Night, where the team will also be celebrating Peace, Love and Baseball. RHP Brad Peacock (7-6, 6.75 ERA) will get the start for Sacramento, as the team welcomes the Tucson Padres to town for a four-game homestand at Raley Field.
