Cats Lose Heartbreaker in Extra Innings
June 12, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release
The Fort Worth Cats had a 3-0 lead after six innings, but a rally in the 9th and then a walkoff led to an Aces home win in the extra frame.
A double by left fielder Daniel Meeley got the scoring started early as Kori Melo crossed the plate for an early 1-0 advantage.
The offense for Fort Worth was held in check for much of the night until the 6th inning, when David Bergin hit a home run that also scored baserunner Greg Bachman, who reached on an error to start the inning. Bergin is now second in the league leader in home runs with four.
Cats starting pitcher Cole Stepehens was pulled with two outs in the 7th inning after giving up two Alexandria runs, one on a solo shot by left fielder Austin Newell, and a Craig Littleman RBI single to complete Stephens' night.
Fort Worth reliever Hector Contin came in for the relief appearance and kept Alexandria scoreless in his one and one-third inning of work.
Cats closer Boomer Potts took the mound in the 9th inning in a save attempt. Potts had four saves on the season entering the night, but a Michael Haynes solo blast to lead off the ninth tied the game at three runs a piece.
In the bottom of the extra frame, Boomer Potts was kept in the game and Aces right fielder Chad Bunting managed to get the walkoff single with two runners on base.
It was the first extra inning game for the Cats this year, who still maintain a one game lead for first place in the United League standings.
The final game of the series is tomorrow at 7:05, as the Cats try to split the road trip before heading home to begin an 8-game homestand.
