Castro's Big Night Highlights Senators' Win

May 14, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

Ofilio Castro recorded four hits and drove in three runs, and was the standout offensive performer in a standout offensive performance by the Harrisburg Senators, which resulted in a 9-3 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday night at Metro Bank Park. The Senators (16-19) collected fourteen hits in total, and dealt the Rock Cats (6-27) their league-leading 27th loss of the season.

The Senators jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning, thanks primarily to a two-run triple by Leonard Davis. The triple scored Brad Coon, who had doubled to lead off the inning, and Danny Espinosa, who reached on an error by starting pitcher Mike McCardell. Davis then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Chris Marrero, and the score was 3-0 after one inning of play.

The Rock Cats, however, quickly tied the score with three runs of their own in the second inning, which would turn out to be the only inning in which they would score in the game. The Senators, by contrast, scored in six of eight offensive innings. That included the second, in which Espinosa drove in Castro with a fielder's choice groundout. Castro had walked to lead off the inning.

The Senators scored in every inning but the fourth and seventh, on their way to their second-highest run output of the season. The highest also came against the Rock Cats, at New Britain on April 24th, when they notched a 15-5 victory.

Castro's three RBI came in the third, sixth, and seventh innings, on two singles and a triple. He also scored two runs, as he came in to score in the sixth after a one-out single. All in all, he finished four-for-four, with a triple, three RBI, a walk, and a run scored. Davis and Brad Coon also had big nights, with Davis finishing two-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored, and Coon going three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored. Espinosa, Marrero, Michael Martinez, Marvin Lowrance, and Jhonatan Solano each had one hit in the game.

The breakout game from the Senators' offense overshadowed a very strong pitching performance from Jeff Mandel (1-4), who earned his first win of the season by throwing seven innings and allowing just three runs. McCardell (0-4) exited after just three and two-thirds innings, having allowed eight hits and four earned runs, and took the loss.

The Senators have now won four straight games, including the first two of the four-game weekend series. Game three is Saturday night at 7 PM at Metro Bank Park, with radio coverage set to begin at 6:45 PM on 1460 AM The Ticket and online at www.senatorsbaseball.com. Aaron Thompson (1-4, 5.81) gets the start for the Sens, and will oppose Kyle Gibson of the Rock Cats, who will be making his first start of the season.
