Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- Richard Castillo tossed seven scoreless innings and the Gary SouthShore RailCats (41-42) tallied six extra-base hits on the way to a 3-0 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries (29-54).
Castillo retired the first six batters he faced before scattering six hits over the next five innings. The Venezuelan lasted seven frames and struck out three batters. Castillo tossed a seven-inning shutout once before this season, July 1st at Sioux City. The right-hander earned the win after being charged with the loss in his last three starts.
Ray Hanson was charged with the loss despite having his best outing of the season. The tall right-hander gave up two runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out five batters and walked two.
The RailCats moved runners to scoring position in three straight innings but were unable to score until the fifth. Andy DeJesus started the frame with a triple down the first base line and scored on a passed ball. Colin Willis followed that with a triple, his first hit as a RailCat, but was left at third base.
Gary SouthShore tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth. Devarie hit the third triple of the game with two outs. Then, DeJesus pushed a bunt down the first base line and slid headfirst into first base to reach safely and score Devarie.
The RailCats added the final run of the game in the seventh. Chase Harris singled, stole second base and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Michael Pair. Harris scored after a sacrifice fly by Frank Martinez to make it 3-0.
Santiago Rodriguez came on in relief of Castillo and retired the first two batters he faced before running into trouble. Next, David Bergin singled and Rodriguez walked two batters. Manager Greg Tagert called on closer Jorge de Leon to come on and get out of the jam. The former Houston Astro struck out Aaron Owen to preserve the shutout. He pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to record his fifth save of the year.
The RailCats go for their first series win in the month of August tomorrow at US Steel Yard. First pitch is at 7:10 PM with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
