Castillo and Johnson Lead PawSox to 3-1 Victory

Rochester, NY - Brian Johnson's six innings of one-run ball and Rusney Castillo's 4-for-4 day guided the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 3-1 win over the Rochester Red Wings in the two clubs' final meeting of the season on Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. The victory earned the PawSox (58-54) a season-series win, 10-8, over the Red Wings (64-49). Pawtucket also snapped its seven-game road losing streak and improved its overall record to 7-3 in its last 10 games. Rochester had to deal with its own Cuban Missile Crisis in the series, as Castillo went 9-for-14 in the three games. He is also 16-for-his-last-33 (.485) dating to July 27. Mike Miller led off the third inning with a double against Red Wings starter Adalberto Mejia (0-1), who was making his Twins organizational debut after being traded from the Giants for Eduardo Nunez a week earlier. Two batters later, Castillo roped a triple into right field to bring Miller home with the first run of the game. The next batter, Ryan LaMarre, doubled into left center field to give the PawSox a 2-0 edge. LaMarre delivered the third and final Pawtucket run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly. Chris Dominguez walked, stole second, advanced to third on Castillo's fourth hit of the game and scored the insurance run on the sacrifice fly. On the mound, Johnson (4-4) turned in his second straight terrific start for the PawSox. He did not allow a hit until one out in the fifth inning, when Reynaldo Rodriguez took him deep (2) for Rochester's only run of the game. In total, Johnson allowed three hits and three walks in his six innings of work, while striking out six. He has surrendered only one run in his last two outings (12.0 innings). The first two batters reached first and third base against Robby Scott in the seventh inning via a walk and an error, but the lefthander used a strikeout, pickoff and groundout to pitch out of the jam. Casey Janssen earned his first hold of the season with a scoreless eighth and then Heath Hembree struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save. Hembree has struck out 16 of the 30 Triple-A batters he has faced this season and he has retired 23 of the last 24 Triple-A hitters he has faced. The PawSox return home to open up a six-game homestand tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Buffalo Bisons. Pawtucket lefthander Roenis Elias (7-4, 3.90) is scheduled to take the mound against Buffalo righthander Chris Leroux (7-7, 4.14).
