Carter, Fiers Cap Season's Weekly Awards

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Chris Carter of the Sacramento River Cats and Michael Fiers of the Nashville Sounds have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the period ending September 5th, the league office announced today.

Carter batted .421 with five doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI and 12 runs scored over eight games last week. The right-handed hitter paced the PCL in extra-base hits, total bases, runs scored and tied for the league-lead in doubles. He closed out the week with five straight games in which he collected multiple hits, including a 5-for-5 performance with a double, a home run, six runs batted in, and three runs scored at Colorado Springs on September 3rd. In the final five games, Carter also scored 10 runs and drove in another nine.

Carter completed his 2011 regular season with the Sacramento River Cats with a .274 batting average, 18 home runs, 72 RBI and 55 runs scored over 75 games. Since July 15th, after a 10-game stint with the Oakland Athletics between June 23rd and July 10th, the California native has registered a PCL-best 51 RBI and 115 total bases while he is tied for the lead in extra-base hits with 27.

Fiers continued his impressive pitching performance since rejoining the Nashville Sounds for his second stint this season on July 9th. In two starts last week, the right-hander recorded two wins and did not allow an earned run while he struck out 13 and walked one. The Florida native tossed his first career complete-game shutout on August 31st, limiting the Iowa Cubs to three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.

With the Sounds this season, his first at the Triple-A level, Fiers is 8-0 with a 1.11 ERA over 12 games (10 starts). The Nova Southeastern University product has held PCL hitters to a .174 batting average against (41 hits/235 at-bats). In six starts during August, the 26-year-old went 4-0 with a league-leading 0.68 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings. Fiers' 0.68 August ERA was the second-best in affiliated ball, trailing only Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies (5-0, 0.45 ERA in five starts).
