Carolina League Year-End All-Star Team Announced

GREENSBORO, NC – The Carolina League announced on Wednesday that former Blue Rocks hurler Zack Greinke was named the 2003 Carolina League Pitcher of the Year. Former Lynchburg Hillcats designated hitter Chris Shelton was named Carolina League Most Valuable Player, while Lynchburg skipper Dave Clark was honored with the league’s Manager of the Year award. Andres Blanco and former Rock Trey Dyson were named to the year-end Carolina League All-Star team.

Greinke, 19, went 11-1 and led the Carolina League with a 1.14 ERA before his promotion to Wichita (AA-Texas) on July 5. The Apopka, FL native reeled off nine straight victories before his only Carolina League defeat at Frederick on June 8.

Shelton led the Hillcats and the Carolina League with a .358 batting average and 21 homeruns. He was promoted to Altoona (AA-Eastern) on July 28.

Clark led the Hillcats to a Carolina League Northern Division first-half championship. He was the skipper of the Carolina League All-Star team, which defeated the California League All-Stars, 5-3, on June 24 in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

Blanco was named to the year-end All-Star team as a co-shortstop. He tied Jeff Bannon of Potomac in the voting for the All-Star shortstop position. Blanco is hitting .247 with 11 doubles, three triples and 25 RBI.

Dyson was named to the All-Star team as one of three outfielders. The Columbia, SC native hit .275 with 31 doubles, 14 homeruns and 72 RBI. He led the Rocks in doubles and homeruns prior to being traded by the Kansas City Royals on Monday to the Cleveland Indians. He was recently assigned to the Kinston Indians.

The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society named Frederick Keys trainer Mark Shires the Carolina League Trainer of the Year. He earned the same honor in 2001.
