Potomac Nationals News Release

Woodbridge, VA- The Potomac Nationals (69-47, 27-20) were eclipsed by the Carolina Mudcats (49-68, 27-20) at Pfitzner Stadium on Sunday night in the series opener by the final score of 5-2 in 10 innings as SS Erik Gonzalez cranked a two-run triple into the gap in left center field to propel the Mudcats on top in the final inning. 1B Jerrud Sabourin added a groundball RBI single into center field to catalyze a three-run lead which the Mudcats would not relinquish.

The Nationals are now (7-8) in their extra inning ballgames.

Potomac LHP Sammy Solis did not receive a decision despite pitching well. Solis went 5.0 frames and allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Carolina RHP Joseph Colon also did not win or lose after 6.1 innings pitched in which he surrendered two unearned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. Colon fanned seven batters.

To take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, the Mudcats used a Gonzalez RBI double served to the gap in right center field to bring home the two-bagger of 3B Paddy Matera. LF Brandon Miller lost the ball in the sky.

Miller extended his hitting streak to nine games with an infield single in the contest.

In the 3rd stanza, Carolina went up 2-0 on the Nationals after a leadoff double was drilled to the corner in left field by DH Todd Hankins. He would later score on an RBI single into right field punched by Matera.

Potomac garnered their only pair of runs off Colon in the 5th. Miller singled to the hole at shortstop before 3B Mike Gilmartin reached on a fielding error charged to 2B Joey Wendle. A passed ball moved Miller and Gilmartin into scoring position in advance of 1B Justin Miller knocking an RBI infield single on the ground behind the second base bag. Another error, this time on an errant throw by Wendle allowed Gilmartin to race home to tie the game at 2-2.

Nationals RHP Colin Bates tossed 2.0 scoreless innings allowing just three hits while fanning a trio. Bates got into trouble in the 8th allowing RF Jordan Smith aboard with a single and Wendle on base after he stroked a double to the right center field wall which did not score Smith because RF Randolph Oduber almost hauled it in on the warning track. P-Nats RHP Rafael Martin then struck out the side, all swinging, despite allowing a base-on-balls to C Tony Wolters which loaded the bases.

Nationals RHP Robert Benincasa (0-3) took the loss after allowing the two-RBI triple to Gonzalez and Sabourin's insurance run providing single in the 10th.

Following a 1.2 innings of shutout relief work for Mudcats RHP Benny Suarez, Carolina RHP Louis Head (3-1) earned the win after working a scoreless 9th and 10th.

Oduber grounded out corner-to-corner, SS Francisco Soriano flew out to left field, and 2B Adrian Sanchez popped out to Sabourin at first base to end the series opener and complete the victory for the visiting club.

In Game Two on Monday night, a 7:05pm first pitch will pit Potomac RHP Blake Schwartz (9-4, 2.92) against Carolina RHP Nick Pasquale (4-6, 4.56).
