Carolina Mudcats News Release

Chattanooga, TN --- Dave Sappelt and Jake Kahaulelio each drove in a pair of runs while Matt Klinker pitched seven more quality innings as Carolina defeated Chattanooga 6-3 at AT&T Field on Friday night.

Sappelt's two-run double in the sixth inning opened up a 5-1 lead for the Mudcats (20-22), but Chattanooga (17-25) pushed across two runs in the last of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate before Jordan Smith (S, 6) induced a soft liner to second base to end the game.

Carolina has now defeated Chattanooga five straight games, and six of seven overall.

Klinker (W, 4-3), who shutout the Lookouts over six innings on May 5th, allowed just one unearned run over seven innings as he collected his third straight victory. Klinker fanned seven, and benefited from the Lookouts having three runners thrown out stealing second in the first four innings of the game, along with a double play grounder.

Kahaulelio singled in runs in the fifth and sixth, and finished 2-4. The Mudcats managed just five hits, but also received seven combined walks, including five from former major leaguer John Koronka (L, 0-3).

Jerry Gil struggled in his relief outing, walking two in the eighth inning, then starting the ninth with two more walks before Tommy Giles singled down the right field line to drive in a run to cut the deficit to 6-2. However, Giles was called out at second base, and then was ejected for arguing the call. Gil then surrendered an RBI-hit to Jesse Mier, and was relieved by Smith.

The series continues Saturday night at 7:15 PM ET with Scott Carroll making his first Double-A start of the season against Alberto Bastardo.
