Carl, Abercrombie Help Goldeyes Even Championship Series

September 17, 2017 - American Association (AA) - Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Wichita Wingnuts 7-1 in Game Two of the American Association Championship Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Thursday night.

The best-of-five series is tied 1-1.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Wes Darvill led off with a sharp single through the left side. Darvill took second on a Mason Katz groundball, and scored the tying run when Andrew Sohn ripped a double into the left field corner. Casey Turgeon followed with a two-run home run to centre field that gave Winnipeg a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Josh Romanski lined a single to centre. Reggie Abercrombie made it 5-1 with a two-out, two-run home run that cleared the batter's eye in centre.

Goldeyes' starting pitcher Edwin Carl protected the lead with a perfect bottom of the fifth. Carl (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on six hits over six innings. Carl walked three and struck out six.

Katz drew a one-out walk in the top of the sixth, took third on another double down the left field line from Sohn, and scored the Goldeyes' sixth run on a wild pitch.

TJ Mittelstaedt led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk but was erased on a double play started by Sohn at shortstop. Sohn smothered Matt Chavez's hard grounder behind the second base bag, scrambled to his feet to get the force on Mittelstaedt, and threw to Shawn Pleffner at first to complete the double play. It was the third double play of the night for the Goldeyes' infield.

Mitchell Lambson struck out two during a scoreless bottom of the seventh, while Victor Capellan retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Abercrombie lined a solo home run to left-centre leading off the top of the ninth that stretched the Goldeyes' lead to 7-1. Capellan then struck out the side in the bottom half to close out the series-tying win.

In the bottom of the second, Richard Prigatano worked an 11-pitch leadoff walk and went to third when Brennen Salgado fought off a single to right field. Jacob Morris singled through the left side to score Prigatano with the game's first run. Facing first and second with no outs, Carl limited the damage when Leo Vargas grounded into a double play at third base. Carl then retired Christian Stringer on a lineout to right that stranded Salgado at third.

Carl escaped a first and third, one-out jam in the fourth by striking out Morris and getting Vargas on a flyball to centre.

Alex Boshers (0-1) started for Wichita and took the loss. Boshers allowed five earned runs on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings. Boshers walked none and struck out one.

All nine Goldeyes' starters had at least one hit with Turgeon, Romanski, Abercrombie, David Bergin, and Sohn each collecting two. Abercrombie has now hit five home runs in five Championship Series games at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium over the last two years.
