Captains Fall to Lugnuts 5-3

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lansing Lugnuts used a four run two out rally in the sixth inning to secure the 5-3 victory over the Captains on Friday night at Classic Park. In the sixth, the two out rally began when Santiago Nessy doubled home two runners and extended the Lugnuts lead to 3-0. Carlos Ramirez reached on an error and then stole second base. Nessy and Ramirez scored on a single by Emilio Guerrero and the Lansing lead was pushed to 5-0.

Lansing scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first inning. Dalton Pompey singled and stole second base and later scored on a single by Christian Lopes. The score was 1-0 Lansing headed to the bottom of the first inning.

Lake County got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Luigi Rodriguez led off with a single to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Jorge Martinez hit a high pop up to third base and the ball was dropped by Lansing's third basemen Gustavo Pierre and Rodriguez scored from second base to make the score 5-1 Lansing. Lake County added a run on the eighth when Erik Gonzalez doubled to leadoff and took third on a fly ball to center. Logan Vick knocked him home with a ground out to second base and the score was 5-2. There were a total of four errors in the game three committed by the Captains and one by Lansing.

Lake County added a run in the ninth when Erik Gonzalez singled home Eric Haase who walked and advanced to third on two passed balls. The final score was 5-3 Lugnuts.

Ryan Merritt (0-1) started for the Captains. Merritt pitched five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. Merritt also struck out five. Merritt was saddled with the loss. Josh Martin pitched one inning and allowed four runs, only two were earned. Martin allowed two hits, two walks and he struck out two. Nick Pasquale pitched two scoreless innings only allowing one hit and striking out one. Francisco Valera pitched a scoreless ninth for the Captains.

Taylor Cole (1-0) started for Lansing and earned the win. Cole pitch six innings of one hit baseball. He fanned seven in his outing. The Lansing bullpen combined to pitch four innings of relief and allowed two runs. One of the runs was earned. Chuck Ghysels earned his first save of the season by pitching the ninth inning and just allowing one un-earned run.

Lake County's opening weekend continues as the Lugnuts remain in Eastlake on Saturday Afternoon. The Captains will send RHP Mitch Brown (0-0,0.00) to the hill and Lansing will counter with LHP Alonzo Gonzalez (0-0,0.00). First pitch is at 1:00 PM.
