Captains Announce 2010 Opening Day Roster

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains, Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, have announced their 2010 Opening Day roster and it will contain many familiar faces. Ten former Captains will return to the team including a key component of the C.C Sabathia trade with the Milwaukee Brewers from two years ago. The Captains open the 2010 season at home on Thursday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. against the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Captains magnet schedule.

The Captains thirteen man pitching staff will boast six former Captains. RHP Trey Haley (4-5,5.56) and RHP Danny Salazar (5-7, 4.44) return to the Captains starting rotation along with two pitchers who pitched for Mahoning Valley last year, RHP Austin Adams (3-1, 4.86) and RHP Clayton Cook (5-3, 2.79). RHP Joe Gardner rounds out the rotation and will make his professional debut with Lake County. He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2009 draft out of UC Santa Barbara.

The bullpen will be lead by closer RHP Cory Burns who (3-2, 1.93) who had 11 saves at Mahoning Valley last season. Rob Bryson, who was acquired for Sabathia and played for the Captains in 2008, will continue his comeback from 2008 off season right shoulder surgery and will be joined by former Captains LHP Francisco Jimenez (7-0, 2.35), LHP Chris Jones (5-3, 4.07) and RHP Nick Sarianides (1-0, 3.18). RHP Antwonie Hubbard (2-0, 2.05), LHP Matt Packer (0-0, 2.38, 1 save) and RHP Marty Popham (6-1, 2.76), who all played for the Scrappers last year, round out the pitching staff.

Catchers Roberto Perez and Chun Chen will be tasked with handling the pitching staff. Perez played for the Captains in 2009 and hit .240 in 17 games after hitting .351 in 34 games with the AZL Indians. He is considered one of the top catching prospects in the Indians organization. Chen (.215) caught for Mahoning Valley last year and is a native of Taiwan.

The Captains infield will a mix of players from the Captains and Mahoning Valley. Ben Carlson (.228) will be at first base, Argenis Martinez (.290) at second, Kyle Smith (.242) at shortstop and former Captain Jeremie Tice at third base. In 2009, Tice played 65 games with the Captains and hit .268. He had his season interrupted with a left elbow injury. Another returning Captain Adam Abraham (.257) will spend time at third base and behind the plate. Casey Frawley (.301) rounds out the infielders. Every one played at Mahoning Valley last year

The Captains outfield will see a pair of returnees as Delvi Cid and Bo Greenwell will be patrolling the outfield again this year. The 20 year old Cid, hit .271 last year and stole 33 bases last year. Greenwell joined the club in late June and posted a .290 batting average. Bo is the son of former Major Leaguer Mike Greenwell. Greg Folgia (.272) and Jason Smit (.279), a Perth Australia native, are the other two the outfielders. Both played for Mahoning Valley in 2009.
