'Caps Tame Cougars in 5-1 Win

GENEVA, IL -The West Michigan Whitecaps parlayed a number of solid performances from their pitching staff into a 5-1 win over the Kane County Cougars Thursday night in front of 8,869 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
For the second straight night, the 'Caps took the early lead. Brett Pirtle lifted a sacrifice fly and Jose Azocar ripped a run-scoring single up-the-middle to take a 2-0 edge. Kane County scored their only run on a B.J. Lopez on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but Will Maddox followed with one of his own an inning later. In the seventh, Maddox plated another run with an RBI-single to take a 4-1 lead while Derek Hill drove home another with a single in the ninth.
Eudis Idrogo (2-3) allowed just one run in 5.1 innings on six hits to earn his second win of the year, while Carlos Hernandez (4-6) gave up only two runs in four frames to take his sixth loss for the Cougars. Although neither of them figured in the decision, reliever Toller Boardman and Drew Smith teamed up to toss 3.2 scoreless innings of outstanding relief in the contest. West Michigan improves to 10-9 in the second half standings, and 49-37 overall. Kane County drops to 40-51 overall and 7-14 in the second half season standings. Rashad Brown led the Whitecaps offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored in the contest.
