'Caps Drop Series as Travis Hit Streak Snapped

West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - Monday was a day of missed opportunities for the West Michigan Whitecaps, who stranded 10 runners on base and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position during a 6-2 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium.

West Michigan (15-19) dropped the rubber match of the three-game set in South Bend (22-11), failing once again to win their first road series of the year. The 'Caps have won each of their last five series-openers but have gone on to clinch a series victory just once over that time.

For the second straight day, the Whitecaps had their hands full against a tough Silver Hawks' starting pitcher. After Brad Allen struck out nine and allowed just two hits over nine innings on Sunday, Jesse Darrah racked up nine strikeouts and allowed just one earned run on Monday.

West Michigan took advantage of a pair of errors to get an unearned run in the top of the first against Darrah, but they were unable to add to it. With runners at second and third and one out, the 23-year-old right-hander struck out the next two batters to limit the damage.

Darrah (3-2) did not allow another baserunner until the fourth, an inning in which he notched his eighth strikeout to strand the bases loaded. He went on to earn the win, allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits with nine punch-outs and three walks.

South Bend recovered quickly from the early deficit.

Carter Bell reached base on a one-out double in the second inning and later scored on a fielder's choice groundout to tie the game. One inning later, Alex Glenn lifted a two-run single to left-center that put the Silver Hawks ahead, 3-1. In the fifth, a leadoff triple by Breland Almadova led to another run on a wild pitch, stretching the home team's advantage to 4-1.

The Whitecaps made some noise in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 4-2 when Danry Vasquez lined his first home run of the season over the right field fence. They went on to chase Darrah from the ballgame and load the bases once again, but reliever Chris Capper struck out Jake Stewart swinging to end the threat.

South Bend put the game out of reach with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, both of which were unearned courtesy of a pair of errors.

Jordan John (1-3) took the loss. The left-hander was charged with four runs on six hits over 4.1 innings of work.

Devon Travis went 0-for-5 in the ballgame and saw his hitting streak snapped at 20 games. Currently standing as the second-longest hitting streak in franchise history - and the longest in the Midwest League this season - the streak may be affected next weekend when West Michigan completes a rain-suspended game from Friday night. If Travis goes hitless in that contest, the streak will be retroactively reduced to 18 games and will rank tied for the third-longest in franchise history.

The Whitecaps continue their nine-game, three-city road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the Dayton Dragons at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. RHP Yorfrank Lopez (3-1, 5.01) is scheduled to take the mound for West Michigan against rehabbing Cincinnati Reds' Major Leaguer Johnny Cueto of the Dragons. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will be on Friday, May 17, at 6:35 p.m. featuring an Avisail Garcia bobblehead doll giveaway for the first 1,000 fans. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
