Cape Breton Highlanders Join National Basketball League of Canada

Today, the National Basketball League of Canada's ninth franchise - Cape Breton Island - revealed its team name and logo and announced an exhibition game for December 18 at Centre 200.

The team will be called the Cape Breton Highlanders and is scheduled to hit the court for the 2015-2016 season, which begins in late 2016. The team colors are blue, red, and white, and two logos were revealed.

The "Team Logo" showcases the Highlanders name with a strong warrior hand holding up a sword. The "Action Logo" brings the blue basketball in the Team Logo to life as a Highlander warrior. The team name was selected through a local contest won by 7-year-old Cody Wambolt of Sydney. Highlanders was a popular name submitted by several people and a random draw was used to select the winner.

Team President, Tyrone Levingston, said, "The team name and logo are inspired by the beauty of the Cape Breton Highlands and the history and bravery of the Cape Breton Highlanders military regiment."

Levingston also announced the team website at HighlandersBasketball.ca and a full day of basketball at Centre 200 on December 18, 2015. Local teams will play throughout the afternoon and then the NBL's Halifax Hurricanes and Island Storm (PEI) will play an exhibition game. Tickets for this event are as low as $5 and are on sale now at the Centre 200 box office and online.

The head coach of the Island Storm, Joe Salerno, said, "This is a great opportunity for the NBL to give the people of Cape Breton a sneak preview of what they can expect to see in the near future. I and the entire Storm organization are very excited about making the trip to Sydney for our game. I've heard it's a great sports town, so we hope to be able to put on a great show and let the fans see the calibre of play and great level of entertainment that NBL Canada can provide."

Halifax Hurricanes' CEO, Mike Brien, added, "We are excited to play our first away exhibition contest in Sydney. It is a great opportunity for us to display the high calibre of basketball that the NBL has to offer to Cape Breton fans. We hope to see a big crowd at the game and I am sure they will enjoy the quality of the talent and the fun atmosphere."

NBL league commissioner, Dave Magley, commented, "On behalf of the NBL, we are very excited about the possibility that a natural rivalry between Cape Breton Island and Halifax will emerge. Bringing a preseason game to Sydney will show the fans in Cape Breton the wonderful product that we have, and hopefully build on the momentum that Tyrone Levingston and his ownership group are starting to create. I'm personally looking forward to being at the exhibition game on December 18 and spending more time getting to know the people of Sydney."

Levingston added, "We are excited to bring the NBL to Cape Breton as early as this December, while demonstrating our commitment to encouraging local youth basketball and providing our local teams a professional venue in which to play and showcase their talent."
