Boston Cannons News Release

Boston, MA - Ten different players contributed to the scoring and Will Manny tallied his 100th professional career goal in the Boston Cannons 17-14 victory at Harvard Stadium over the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Saturday night.

The win also gave Boston the season sweep and tie-breaker over Chesapeake this year. The Cannons defeated the Bayhawks 14-12 on May 12 in Annapolis.

"It was a great team win. There's still a few pieces left to clean up but we accomplished what we needed. Getting back to .500 was our goal and we did that. We're now back in the playoff race and moving onto the next game," attackman, Will Manny said following the win.

The Cannons scored the first three goals of the tilt, seeing their offense come alive. Justin Turri opened the scoring and seven seconds later; it was Joe Nardella who found the back of the net off a clean face-off win. Kevin Buchanan soon made it 3-0 returning to the scoring column after being held in check in Long Island last weekend.

Boston's defense stymied the Bayhawks in the first quarter, limiting their transition game and forcing turnovers. The Cannons entered the second quarter with a 5-2 lead as Mitch Belisle scored a surprise goal from a close defensemen. Rookie Challen Rogers scored his second goal of the season to complete the Cannons offense for the quarter.

After the Bayhawks scored the first goal of the second quarter, Will Manny got on the board for the first time in two games. The goal marked the 100th professional career goal for the attackman, who was drafted by the Cannons in the 2nd round of the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft.

Manny cut towards the net, receiving a clean feed from Kylor Bellistri to sneak one past the Chesapeake goaltender, Brian Phipps. Three minutes later, Manny scored again for his 101st tally.

The Cannons headed into the locker room holding onto a 9-5 lead at the half. The first half was the start that the Cannons were looking for, but there was still plenty of time remaining. It would have to be a full 60 minute effort.

Myles Jones captured the first goal of the third quarter for the Bayhawks, but the Cannons surged onwards to a four-goal run as Josh Hawkins, Brent Adams, Kevin Buchanan, and Rogers contributed to the offense.

Chesapeake brought the heat for the remainder of the third scoring the next five goals. The Bayhawks had cut the Cannons lead to 13-11.

Bellistri added some insurance at the start of the final quarter. Bellistri caught his own rebound from the initial shot and fired the ball into the cage past Phipps for the 14-11 lead.

Despite three more goals by the Bayhawks, the Cannons held their ground. Rogers, Hawkins, and Adams all scored once more and the Cannons won by a final of 17-14 in front of a large Harvard Stadium crowd during the inaugural "Cannons Fighting Cancer" night.

Hawkins and Rogers both had hat tricks. It marks the second hat trick for Hawkins this season and the first career hat trick for Rogers. Nardella was 18 for 35 at the Face-off X and also led Boston with 12 ground balls. Tyler Fiorito was fantastic for the Cannons in between the pipes stopping fourteen shots.

"The win tonight over the Bayhawks was the epitome of a team win! 10 different players contributed to the scoring, the defense, the goaltending, and the face-offs all were extremely well executed too. The team was determined to finish the game with a victory," Head Coach Sean Quirk commented.

The win evened Boston's record at 5-5 this year and pushed them back into the playoff race. Next Saturday, the Cannons will hit the road to face the Rattlers and look to sweep Rochester in the season series.
