August 23, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Tuesday afternoon that the team has traded 1B/DH David Bergin to the St. Paul Saints in exchange for two players to be named later.
In 73 games with the Canaries this season, Bergin hit .262 with 17 doubles, 15 home runs and 58 RBI. Bergin enters Tuesday tied for 6th in the American Association in home runs and 11th overall in RBI. Bergin has been one of the American Association's top power hitters over the last two seasons. He collected 75 extra-base hits, including 30 home runs with the Canaries, while posting a .300 batting average to go along with his 123 RBI in 172 games played.
The Tampa, FL native put together the best all-around offensive performance of the season for the Canaries in 2015. The Tampa, FL native set career highs in nearly every major category while leading the team in average (.331) triples (4), home runs (15), RBI (65), on-base percentage (.427), and slugging percentage (.552). Bergin was also second on the team in hits (114), doubles (23), and games played (93).
"David has been a huge part of this organization over the last two seasons," said Canaries General Manager Duell Higbe. "Trading away a player like him is never easy. However, we feel that this move ultimately gives the organization a chance to build for the future. We wish David nothing but the best moving forward."
The Canaries do not go away empty handed in this trade. In exchange for Bergin, the Canaries receive the rights for two Saints players to be named later for the 2017 season.
The Sioux Falls Canaries open up a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Tuesday night is non-profit night at the Birdcage, with representatives from Health Connect and March of Dimes joining us at the ballpark.
