Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-2) suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season, after falling to the St. Paul Saints (6-1) by the final score of 9-5 on Wednesday night at Sioux falls Stadium.

St. Paul starting pitcher Robert Coe (2-0, 2.91 ERA) held the Canaries offense in check over the first four innings, retiring 9 of his first 10 batters faced. He gave up his first hit of the night on a Blake Schmit, leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, and loaded the bases with a pair of walks in the inning before forcing Frank Martinez to ground out to end the inning.

Schmit connected again in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending a two-out, two-run homerun (2) over the wall in left. The Edina, MN native finished the night going 2-for-5 with two RBI, and now leads the team in hits (10), runs (6), and batting average (.417).

The homerun was a minor blip on the radar for Coe, who settled back in, retiring the next six Canaries batters before leaving the game with two outs in the seventh. Coe earned his second win of the season after allowing two runs on five hits, striking out a season-high six batters.

Canaries starting pitcher Shawn Blackwell got off to a rocky start, giving up three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. The right-hander faced eight Saints batters in the first, but settled down after that, retiring 14 of his next 16 batters faced.

The Canaries trailed 3-2 going into the sixth inning before Saints infielder Mike Gilmartin sent a two-out blast over the right-field wall to give his team a two run lead.

The Gilmartin homerun was the fourth allowed this season by Blackwell, and the ninth given up by the Canaries pitching staff this season. Only the Joplin Blasters (10) and Gary SouthShore Railcats (10) have allowed more team homeruns this season.

The Canaries mounted one final comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning, but left the bases loaded with the potential tying run striking out at the plate after scoring three runs in the inning. The Birds' left 21 men on base during the three game series, and were 0-for-4 with the bases load in two-out situations.

Blackwell suffered his first loss of season after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits, striking out seven Saints batters over 6 1/3 innings.

The Canaries have their first scheduled off-day on Thursday, but return to action on Friday when they open up a three-game road series against the Sioux City Explorers. Madison Boer (0-0, 7.20 ERA) will make his second start of the season against Sioux City right-hander Eric Wordekemper (0-0, 3.60 ERA).
