Canaries Bring Back Guinn and Jones for 2017 Season

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Friday afternoon that the organization has come to terms with infielder BJ Guinn and right-handed pitcher James Jones for the 2017 American Association season.

Guinn, 27, appeared in 32 games for the Canaries last season, batting .297 with six doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI. The switch hitting infielder hit safely in 17 of 24 games during the month of August while posting eight multi-hit games to go along with a .310 batting average.

The El Sobrante, CA native was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 10th round of the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft, and again by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round of the 2010 Draft. Guinn spent six seasons in the Padres minor league system, batting .250 with 66 extra base hits and 107 RBI. He enters the 2017 season with a .266 batting average in 383 career games played.

Jones, 28, appeared in 27 games for the Birds last season, posting a 0-2 record and 4.80 ERA. The hard throwing right-hander allowed 23 runs (16 earned) over 30 innings of work while striking out 26 batters. He holds a 1-5 record and 4.85 ERA to go along with 41 strikeouts and 28 walks in two American Association seasons with the Canaries.

The Barlow, KY native was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 33rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Jones spent parts of two seasons in the Padres minor league system, made it up to the double-A level during the 2012 season. Jones enters the 2017 American Association season holding a 7-15 record to go along with a 4.03 ERA in 136 career relief appearances.

The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park.
