Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Pensacola, FL - The Sioux Falls Canaries (20-25) bid to sweep the Pensacola Pelicans (21-24) failed when the Canaries were defeated 7-3 on Thursday night at Jim Spooner Field. Ken Lup led the Canaries offensively going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

The Pelicans scored in the bottom of the first inning. Luis Guance and Adam Darby opened the inning with back-to-back singles and proceeded to execute a double steal. Guance scored on a ground ball off the bat of Chase Burch, and after one inning the Pelicans had an early lead, 1-0.

Pensacola expanded their lead in the bottom of the third. With two in scoring position and two outs, Burch delivered a double to score Darby and Antoin Gray, giving the Pelicans a 3-0 lead. Marcos Rodriguez followed with a single to score Burch, and after three innings the Pelicans led 4-0.

The Canaries got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Joe Anthonsen reached on a throwing error by Pelicans second baseman Antoin Gray. Anthonsen got to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Trevor Lawhorn. The run put the Canaries on the scoreboard, but they trailed by three, 4-1.

The Canaries pulled within one in the seventh. The bases were loaded on singles by Ken Lup and Jared Lemieux and a walk to Joe Anthonsen. Cory Harris hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Lup, pulling the Birds within two, 4-2. Lawhorn followed with a groundball to Pelicans third baseman Lester Contreras that was thrown away at first base. Lemieux scored on the play, and Anthonsen was thrown out at the plate, ending the inning with the Canaries a run shy, 4-3.

Pensacola added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two on and two out, Justin Humphries hit his fourth home run of the season, to give the Pelicans a 7-3 advantage.

With the Canaries down to their final out in the ninth inning, Cory Harris drew a walk to extend his consecutive games on-base streak to 38 games, seven shy of the American Association record set by Scooter Jordan of the St. Joe Blacksnakes in 2007 and 2008. Lawhorn followed by reaching on an error, but a strike out of Patrick Reilly ended the game with the Canaries falling, 7-3.

Kyle Middleton (3-1) pitched six innings and held the Canaries to one run on four hits to pick up his third win of the season. Travis Kane (2-6) gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings and was saddled with the loss.

The Canaries now head to Grand Prairie where they will finish the first half with a three-game series beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Fort Worth Cats on July 7. The game, which will mark the beginning of the second half, will feature a "Fly Away Giveaway" presented by Allegiant Air.
