Canadians Fall to Indians

July 21, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release

Spokane, WA- Canadians CF J.B. Woodman went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, but Vancouver's bullpen struggled down the stretch as the C's fell 7-2 to the Indians in the final game of a week-long road trip that went through Boise and Spokane.

Vancouver opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when CF J.B. Woodman hit the first of two doubles, and came into score on a hard hit single off the bat of DH Jacob Anderson who missed Tuesday's game after he got hit in the ear with a fastball a night earlier.

The Canadians would trail 3-2 heading to the bottom of the 7th inning, shortly after making it a one-run game on an RBI double from Woodman. Vancouver reliever LHP Matt Smoral loaded the bases without recording an out, then give way to RHP Nick Hartman who couldn't prevent those runners from scoring as the Indians would grab a 6-2 lead before tacking on a run in the bottom of the 8th to pull away with the 7-2 victory.

Vancouver pitching walked nine (9) on the night, and hit a batter (Xavier Turner) that combined with the eight hits collected by Spokane was too much to overcome. Combine that with the 14 strikeouts that Indians pitching recorded on Vancouver's offense, and it was simply not the Canadians night to remain in a share of top spot in the North Division with five games remaining.

With the loss, Vancouver falls to 16-17 (.485) while Spokane (16-17) moves back into a tie with the Canadians - both just a lone game back of top spot in the North with five games to go.

Note: Canadians RHP T.J. Zeuch has had his start pushed back to Friday, with LHP Nate Abel getting the start in tomorrow's series opener vs. Eugene.

Vancouver returns to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Thursday, July 21st at 7:05pm to open up a five-game series against Eugene in the final series of the first half. The Canadians announced on Tuesday that all five games of the upcoming five-game home stand are SOLD OUT. Tickets to Vancouver's upcoming series against Tri-City (July 29-31) are available at www.canadiansbaseball.com by calling 604.872.5232 or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street, Vancouver, B.C.
