November 28, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Winnipeg Goldeyes
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher David Hatt and catcher Matt Albaugh to contracts for the 2014 season.
Hatt, 23, is coming off a spectacular collegiate career with the NCAA Division II Wilmington University Wildcats. As a senior in 2013, the product of Hamilton, Ont. went 7-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 16 starts and 91 innings pitched. He also posted a complete-game shutout. Among his many accolades, Hatt was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Pitcher of the Year.
"He's a young right-hander that has a little deception in his delivery," Forney said. "He's not going to overpower anybody, but we'll see if he can make our team out of the bullpen."
Hatt suited up for Team Canada at the World Baseball Challenge this past summer and helped the Medicine Hat Mavericks reach the championship series of the Western Major Baseball League, which is a summer collegiate league in western Canada. He went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA in five regular season games, including four starts, with the Mavericks and 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three playoff starts.
Albaugh, 23, posted a .310 batting average during his four-year collegiate career with the NCAA II Kutztown University Golden Bears. As a senior in 2013, he hit .344 with a home run and 29 RBI in 44 games and was on the watch list for the Tino Martinez Award, which goes to the top NCAA Division II baseball player every year. He was also named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division First Team for the second time in his career.
"He throws well, receives well and has a plan at the plate. He was very consistent through four years of college," Forney said.
Behind the plate, Albaugh threw out 35 per cent of opposing base stealers and had a .995 fielding percentage.
As a freshman, Albaugh helped Kutztown University reach the NCAA Division II World Series by hitting a home run in the Atlantic Regional tournament.
The Goldeyes have three players under contract for the 2014 season, including two pitchers and one position player.
