Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Jan. 19, 2013) - Sound Tigers forward Scott Campbell's first career AHL goal came 3:29 into the third period and turned out to the game-winner, as Bridgeport defeated the Binghamton Senators 4-2 at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 19-16-2-2 overall. The Senators fall to 25-9-1-3.
The Sound Tigers scored three power play goals in their previous game, a 5-4 win over Albany last Sunday, and picked up where they left off in the first period of tonight's game. Jack Combs found John Persson in front of the Binghamton crease on the power play, and Persson fired past goaltender Marc Cheverie for his 14th goal of the season to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead 7:52 into the game.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Senators 13-2 in the first period, and carried their lead into the middle frame when Sean Backman doubled Bridgeport's lead. Binghamton turned the puck over in the slot to Campbell, who found Backman in front of the Binghamton net. Backman deked to his backhand and flipped the puck over Cheverie for his fifth goal of the season to put the Sound Tigers ahead 2-0 6:05 into the second period.
However, the Senators would dictate the action for the remainder of the period and cut their deficit in half at the 15:35 mark. The Sound Tigers defense was unable to hold the puck in the Binghamton zone, and Senators forward Cole Schneider skated towards Kevin Poulin on a breakaway. Schneider backhanded the puck past Poulin's glove for his fifth goal of the season, and Binghamton entered the dressing room down 2-1 after firing 17 shots in net in the middle period.
Campbell scored his first career AHL goal early in the third period to provide the Sound Tigers with a two-goal cushion. The first-year Sound Tiger sent a shot off of Cheverie's left shoulder that trickled across the goal line and gave the home team a 3-1 lead.
Binghamton answered 2:35 later when Mika Zibanejad took a pass from Danny New in the slot and fired past Poulin for his third goal of the season to make the score 3-2. However, Ty Wishart provided an insurance goal to put the game out of reach. Brock Nelson laid a big hit along the left half-wall of the Binghamton zone, and the puck came right to Wishart in the slot. Wishart skated the puck down towards Cheverie and snapped a shot past his blocker for his second goal of the season with 4:23 left in regulation.
Kevin Poulin made 24 saves to earn his 12th save of the season for the Sound Tigers. Marc Cheverie stopped 25 shots in the loss.
The Sound Tigers return to action Sunday afternoon when they play host to the Springfield Falcons at 3:00 p.m.
