Cammarata, Stepan Share USHL Award
Waterloo, Iowa-Zach Stepan and Taylor Cammarata had nine points apiece in three Waterloo Black Hawks games last week, and together they were named the United States Hockey League's co-CCM Forwards of the Week on Monday.
"Taylor and Zach - and their linemate Justin Kloos - had clutch performances in front of big crowds. You saw some of what they're capable of, and we need them to continue working hard as we get into the middle of the season," said Waterloo head coach P.K. O'Handley.
Visiting the Des Moines Buccaneers Wednesday, the Cammarata-Kloos-Stepan line was responsible for three goals in a 6-5 loss. Stepan recorded three assists, while Cammarata scored once and set up two other goals.
At home the next night against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, Stepan was the top star of the game. The Hastings, Minnesota native notched the first hat trick of the season by a Black Hawk as Waterloo edged the visitors 4-3. Stepan completed the three-goal night with the tally that proved to be the winner; he now leads the USHL with five game-winning goals this season. Cammarata had three points and was responsible for the only goal Stepan didn't produce.
In a rematch at Cedar Rapids Saturday, Cammarata's third three-point game of the weekend brought him a career milestone. The reigning USHL Rookie of the Year scored the final goal in a 7-3 victory, his 100th career regular season point. Along with two assists in the performance, Cammarata is the USHL's current leading scorer with 31 points in just 14 games. Stepan had a goal and an assist Saturday.
All totaled, Stepan had four goals and five assists, while Cammarata had three and six respectively. In his first season with the Hawks, Stepan is committed to Ohio State University and was a 2012 NHL Draft Pick of the Nashville Predators. Earlier this season, he shared Forward of the Week honors with Todd Skirving of the Sioux Falls Stampede. Cammarata is a University of Minnesota recruit and a 2013 Draft prospect. He was named the USHL Forward of the Week twice in 2011/12. Eamon McAdam, Ian McCoshen, Cal Petersen, and Vince Hinostroza have also won league weekly awards this season.
The Hawks complete their November schedule with a showdown against the Eastern Conference-leading Dubuque Fighting Saints. The 7:05 contest is the first of four consecutive home games for Waterloo. For tickets, visit the Black Hawks website to order online or call the Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
