California League All-Star Team Announced

SALEM, VA -- The 2006 California League All-Star Team will be led by a host of talented pitchers from up and down the Golden State as they take on the host Carolina League All-Stars on Tuesday, June 27th at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in Salem, VA.

League All-Stars come from all ten of the league\'s ballclubs, including four players from the San Jose Giants (ML affiliate: San Francisco); three players each from the Visalia Oaks (ML affiliate: Tampa Bay), Lake Elsinore Storm (ML affiliate: San Diego) and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (ML affiliate: LA/Anaheim); two players each from Bakersfield Blaze (ML affiliate: Texas), Modesto Nuts (ML affiliate: Colorado) and High Desert Mavericks (ML affiliate: Kansas City); one representative from the Stockton Ports (ML affiliate: Oakland), Inland Empire 66\'ers (ML affiliate: Seattle) and Lancaster JetHawks (ML affiliate: Arizona).

The San Jose Giants Coaching Staff will lead the California League in the bi-coastal showcase of the top prospects in Advanced Class-A professional baseball from 18 Major League affiliates. San Jose Giants skipper Lenn Sakata -- the Milwaukee Brewers first round pick in the 1975 amateur draft (secondary phase -- 10th pick overall) -- will be joined by San Jose Pitching Coach Jim Bennett, Coach Garrett Nago and Trainer Yukiya Oba.

Sakata and his staff earned the honor of coaching the All-Star team by winning the 2005 California League Championship, his second overall and first outright title in tenure at the helm in San Jose (San Jose and Lake Elsinore were co-Champions in 2001).

The 2006 HCA Virginia Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game is being played for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. The first match-up ended in a 2-2 tie after 11 innings in a game hosted by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in June of 1996. The Carolina League leads the all-time series 4-3, with two ties (1996, 2002). This game will mark the first time that the State of Virginia has hosted this ballgame.

The 2006 HCA Virginia Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game is presented by Lewis-Gale Medical Center. The ballpark will open to ticketed fans on Tuesday, June 27 at 2:30PM for the Coca-Cola All-Star FanFest. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:07PM.
