Calica's Big Night Leads Scrappers

Brooklyn, NY- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rode the hot hitting Andrew Calica to a 5-1 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday night at MCU Park. Calica reached base in all five at bats, driving in two runs and scoring three more as the Scrappers secured the series win.
The Scrappers first run would come in the top of third inning when Gavin Collins drew a bases loaded walk to score Calica who had reached with two outs on a hit by pitch. Calica now leads the New York Penn League with 14 hit by pitches.
After Brooklyn tied the game in the bottom of the third, Calica would again deliver in the fourth inning. Jake Goihl started the inning with a leadoff triple to centerfield. Goihl would score the eventual winning run on a passed ball with two outs. Then with Jorma Rodriguez on base, Calica connected on a two run homerun off the top of the foul pole in right field for a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning Calica would strike again. With two outs, Calica tripled to centerfield to extend the inning. After an Erlin Cerda walk, Calica would score the final run of the game on an Emmanuel Tapia RBI single, one of four hits for Tapia.
The trio of Juan Hillman, Ryan Colegate and Henry Martinez would make sure that the lead would stand.
Hillman started and took a no decision in 4.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on five hits. Hillman walked four and struck out one. Colegate (5-2) earned the win in 4.0 innings of relief. He allowed three hits and walked two while striking out four. Martinez finished the game with a perfect inning of work including one strikeout.
The Scrappers (32-32) now return to Eastwood Field to host the West Virginia Black Bears (31-34) for a three game series starting Friday night at 7:05. Tanner Tully will get the start for the Scrappers.
