Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - Seth Bynum's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, an 8-6 walk-off win in game two of their four game series with the Buffalo Bisons.
With one out in the ninth, Syracuse first baseman Jason Botts slapped a single to center for his fourth hit of the night. With Bynum at the plate, Botts advanced to third on a pair of passed balls by Buffalo's J.R. House, putting the winning run 90 feet away. Bynum crushed Manny Acosta's two-two pitch out of the park to give the Chiefs their first win of the homestand.
The Chiefs (48-38) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Boomer Whiting started the frame with a walk and stole second for his 15th steal of the season. He scored two batters later on Chase Lambin's double to the right centerfield gap to make it 1-0 Chiefs. Jason Botts followed by clobbering a two-run homer to right, his fourth in a Syracuse uniform.
Buffalo (44-41) trimmed the Chiefs' lead to two with a run in the fourth against Syracuse starter Matt Chico. Former Chief Jorge Padilla trickled a single into left field to begin the inning and moved up to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Bisons third baseman Mike Cervenak slashed another single to left, plating Padilla for Buffalo's first run.
Syracuse picked up another run in the fifth to go up 4-1. With one away, Lambin battered a solo homer to right for his team-leading 11th long ball of the season.
After the Chiefs grabbed two more runs in the sixth, the Bisons cut the gap to one with a four-run seventh inning. With two on and nobody out, leftfielder Lucas Duda blasted a home run to right, narrowing Syracuse's lead to two. Duda now has six homers over his last nine games.
After J.R. House struck out looking for the first out of the inning, Fernando Martinez smashed a pinch-hit homer to right. It was Martinez's second dinger in as many nights.
The Chiefs lost the lead in the eighth after Mike Jacobs pounded Ron Villone's one-out pitch over the centerfield wall for Buffalo's third home run in two innings. The solo shot gave Jacobs his 11th tater of the season and it knotted the score at six.
Atahualpa Severino earned the win, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings for Syracuse. Buffalo's Manny Acosta dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
The Chiefs will face the Bisons again Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The pitching matchup will be Syracuse's Jeff Mandel (4-3, 4.70) against Buffalo's Raul Valdes (1-0, 0.93). First pitch will be at 7:00.
