Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(21-29) took both ends of a twin-bill against the Windy City Thunderbolts(24-26), by scores of 1-0 and 4-3, with the nightcap coming in extra innings.

Game one was your classic pitchers' duel between the Bums' Austin Bembnowski and Windy City's Brady Muller. The one run in the game, was on the first home run in the young career of Christian Santisteban, as he launched a solo shot over the right field wall.

At one point, Bembnowski retired sixteen Thunderbolts in a row. He gets the win, improving to 2-0, as he went 6 2/3 innings of two-hit ball. He walked one and struck out two. Brady Muller suffers the complete game loss, giving up the lone run on six hits, and struck out four. He drops to 1-5. Andrew Brockett got the final out of the game to earn his fifth save of the season

Game 2 looked like it was going to be a similar kind of game with Bums' starter, Kramer Champlin, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Traverse City got on the board in the third inning, when Jeff DeBlieux led off with his first home run of the season. Marco Derkes followed with a single and moved to second on a Casey Rodrigue sacrifice bunt. Steven Patterson then drove him in with an RBI single, to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Windy City's Blair Beck knocked a single to right field to lead off the sixth, breaking up the Champlin no-hit bid. John Williams then hit a smash off of first baseman Giancarlo Brugnoni for a double, moving Beck to third. Two batters later, Coco Johnson grounded out to drive home Beck. Cody Keefer then hit a high fly ball to left field, which the fielders lost in the lights. It dropped for a double and Williams came in to score to tie the game.

The game moved in to the ninth inning, putting the international tie breaker into effect. With Johnson at second, Keefer led off with an RBI single to right, giving Windy City the lead. The 'Bolts loaded the bases but could not bring any more runs in to score. In the bottom of the inning, Elijah Trail was placed at second base. With one out, both Brugnoni and Kendall Patrick walked to load the bases. DeBlieux then hit a slow roller to second to drive home Trail and the throw the first was late, so everyone was safe. Derkes came up to the plate and walked, forcing home Brugnoni, winning the game for the Beach Bums.

James Ball gets the win to improve to 2-3. He only allowed the international tie-breaker unearned run, and held strong after the bases were loaded. Joel Lima who hurled a perfect eighth, struggled with his command in the ninth, is dealt the loss to drop to 0-1.
