Bums Shocked by Otters in Ninth

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(22-31) had a two run lead heading into the ninth but fell to the Evansville Otters(31-21), by a final score of 6-4.

Both teams went scoreless in the first but Evansville got the game rolling in the second with an RBI double by Denzel Richardson. After he stole third, he scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the third, Jeff DeBlieux led off with a single to left and Marco Derkes walked. Ryan Bottger moved both runners up on a well-executed sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Will Kengor slammed a line drive off of the pitcher to score DeBlieux, cutting the Bums' deficit in half.

With one out in the 4th, Giancarlo Brugnoni was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a DeBlieux walk. Derkes then came to the plate and tied the game with an RBI single to right, scoring Brugnoni. Ryan Bottger followed with an RBI single of his own, scoring DeBlieux, and the Bums led by one. Traverse City added to the lead in the fifth and Steven Patterson reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kengor who doubled to lead off the frame.

With the Beach Bums holding a 4-2 lead, Chris Breen led off the top of the eighth inning for Evansville with an opposite field solo homer, his sixth of the season, cutting the lead down to one. In the ninth, pinch-hitter Jeff Gardner slapped a lead-off double to right. Christopher Riopedre then singled moving Gardner to third. Rolando Gomez tied the game on an RBI single to right, scoring Gardner. Two outs later, with an intentional walk in the middle, Nik Balog served a two-run single through the left side of the infield, giving the Otters the lead.

Ken Frosch only pitched to two batters in the eighth, allowing a walk and striking out one, but earned the win to improve to 4-1. Andrew Brockett struggled in the ninth, allowing three runs on four hits. He gets the loss to drop to 2-3. Randy McCurry hurled a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his 17th save of the season. Lost in the game's outcome, was a solid start by Michael Shreves as he went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, and fanning three.

Tomorrow evening, the Beach Bums and Evansville Otters play the finale of this three game weekend set. On the hill for Evansville is Tyler Vail while the Bums will start Austin Bembnowski. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 4:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.

Don't Forget- Coming up on Sunday, July 17th, it's Family FUNday Sunday, complete with a post game run of the bases for all children. Also, you can get autographs from the entire team, right in front of the clubhouse, after the kids are finished running. The gates will open at 3pm.

The Beach Bums Box Office & Gift Shop are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
