Bums' Sell RHP Hagen To Astros, Catcher Parham To Mariners
Traverse City MI-- The Traverse City Beach Bums have sold the contracts of catcher John Parham to the Seattle Mariners and right-handed pitchers B.J. Hagen to the Houston Astros.
Hagen, 23, is a 6'3" 230-pound relief pitcher who joined the Beach Bums in 2009 after completing his college career at UNC - Charlotte in 2008. In his first professional season, Hagen was 1-3 with 3 saves and a 2.48 ERA in 40 innings. He only gave up 24 hits last summer, holding opponents to a.178 average, and striking out 38 while walking just 16. Hagen's most impressive outing was on August 19th in Sauget, Illinois, versus the Gateway Grizzlies when he pitched three perfect innings and struck out all nine batters he faced. Hagen had a 26 inning stretch in the second half of the season where he gave up just two earned runs, struck out 30 hitters, and allowed just 10 hits.
"Hagen got better and better as the summer went on, and in the end, had too good of numbers for someone not to notice," said Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "He has a deceptive delivery and throws on a hard, downward plane, which can make a 88-90mph fastball look like a 95-97mph fastball. As he built confidence down the stretch, he was unhittable."
Parham, 22, is a 5'10" 180-pound catcher from Rialto, California, and played collegiately for California State - Northridge. Parham hit.280 with 24 doubles and 12 home runs during his four-year college career. He signed with the Beach Bums this off-season after going undrafted last June. He will make his professional debut with the Mariners this spring.
"Parham is a solid, young catcher who can handle the bat," said Wuerfel. "The Mariners saw in him exactly what we did - a polished defensive player who understands the game and plays the right way. We're happy that he will get this opportunity and I'm sure he will do well."
